Title: looking for funny historical romances
Description: suggestions/recommendations

fantasy221 - January 31, 2008 05:02 AM (GMT)
I prefer to read light and funny books as opposed to books with suspense or heavy subject matter. Right now I'm hunting for romance authors and books that are funny but set in historical time periods. To give you an idea of what I mean, and to see what I've already read I've prepared a list!

Already Read/Have TBR:
Nearly all by Kasey Michaels' historicals
Everything by Karen L. King
Educating Caroline - Patricia Cabot (TBR)
Nearly all of Lyndsay Sands' historicals

I've seen this list but I don't know which books to try first. Looking on Mrs. Giggles for reviews isn't always helpful since I think she doesn't like the funny as much as I do. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!

I really enjoy Julia Quinn's novels. Light, funny, and feel-good. I actually have several that I'm going through like water at the moment that I can pass on to you, if you like.

Sure that would be great! Would you like anything off my shelf?

I was going to make the same recommendation. Her books tend to be light and funny.

Fantasy!! One of my most delightful reads EVER ... Kerrelyn Sparks historical romance with LOTS of comedy (this is a non-paranormal, before she began her Love At Stake vampire series):

For Love or Country:

Thanks for this thread! I'll be looking for some of these books too!

I don't read a lot of romances, but this series has always been one of my favorites. Lots of humor and a good story line too.

Orphan Train Series

* Caroline and the Raider 1992

* Emma and the Outlaw 1991

* Lily and the Major 1990

I've read a few others by Linda Lael Miller and found them to be similarly enjoyable.

I just wanted to rec Karen L. King! I feel like Karen L. King is one of those hidden gems authors. I bought her first book in a lot off of ebay and I loved it! It was one of the first funny historicals I had ever read. She has a trilogy of "Dueling Pistols" books that are great. I don't know if she's still writing or if she's just writing slowly but she hasn't had a book since 2006. :(

Julia Quinn's Bridgerton series is fantastic and hilarious. Her books prior to the Bridgertons, I'm not so much a fan of. However, I did enjoy the Miranda Cheever book she released last year, I think it was.

I'll try to think of some more when I get home.

Glad I could suggest someone new to you. Hope you will find them as fun of a read as I did. :D

Fantasy, I may have a couple of Lynsay Sands books that are funny historical romances. I'll check tonight (after LOST) and let you know!!

:)

I also like Lisa Kleypas. Her Wallflower series is good, very light. There are 4 books - It Happened in Autumn, Devil in Winter, and Scandal in Spring. The first one is a Summer title but I forgot what it was.

Kyrissaean - January 31, 2008 11:38 PM (GMT)
I was going to suggest Teresa Medeiros and Julia Quinnn too! And possibly the older Julie Garwood books, from back when she just did historicals.

I'd forgotten that Patricia Cabot was Meg Cabot -- I'll have to check those out! I know I've read Sabrina Jeffries before.... I wonder what I thought of her stuff. Ack! The brain is going!

My sister, who's the big historical romance reader in the fam at the moment, says she's really into Celeste Bradley just now, and while she wouldn't say they're super ha-ha-type funny, they've been putting her in a happy place.

I haven't read anything by Celeste yet myself, so I think I may need to borrow some of sis's. :)

ETA: Hey! This is my 1000th post here! Dang that must mean I've been quiet lately!

Secrets of a Summer Night. I have every Lisa Kleypas book except for the most recent one, as keepers.

I second Teresa Medeiros.

Charming the Prince and Breath of Magic were cute.

All the Lynsay Sands I had are no longer with me, but I have this book,

The Bride by Julie Garwood, which I enjoyed. Historical, the Scotish Highlands, and it is amusing, too.

If you want it, let me know and I can send it right away. :)

That's the second rec I've gotten for Charming the Prince so I ordered it from PBS!

I recently picked up The Imposter by her. The blurb looks like its humorous but I wasnt sure about the rest in the series...I'm not usually a fan or spy/suspense-y subplots.

I think Cathy Maxwell novels tend to be more light and funny (although not necessarily one of the best Historical Romance authors that I have read)

terrafreaky - February 2, 2008 03:04 AM (GMT)
Sandra Hill has a couple time travel historicals that I love.

Frankly My Dear & Sweeter Savage Love

I've got too many books so I'm not even going to look at your shelf!

I'll just need your addy please, and I'll have it out on Monday.

I forgot about Sandra Hill. Though I've not cared for all of hers, I liked The Last Viking.

Another author I thought of was Dara Joy. I liked Rejar and Knight of a Trillion Stars. Both are part of a Sci/Fi series. As I recall Rejar is more of the historical cause he goes back in time. I think KoaTS is more contemporary. It's been over 10 years since I've read these though.

Yeah I forgot to add her to my list. I loved Very Virile Viking - it was a keeper for me. I've read a couple of others of hers but they always veer off into cheesy instead of funny for me.

How about Man in a Kilt by Sandy Blair? It's the first in a series and pretty light weight reading.

fantasy221 - April 29, 2008 02:00 AM (GMT)
Wanted to report back about some of the funny historicals I've found.

Far and away the funniest was Simply Scandalous by Tamara Lejune. She might be my new favorite author. She's a relatively new author though so I'm going to have to space out her next books.

Kyri's sister is right about Celeste Bradley; I read Desperately Seeking a Duke and while it's not hilarious, it was light and humorous. A really good, captivating book that left me feeling warm and fuzzy.

Also the Pickpocket Countess by Bronwyn Scott is cute too. Not laugh out loud hilarious like Simply Scandalous was but definitely chuckle-worthy.
