Title: ? about Tamora Pierce books
Description: Which ones tie in?

k_kay - January 16, 2008 02:36 AM (GMT)
I know she has a few different series. And from what i understand each series is a stand alone thing, however i know some loosely tie in to one another. Which ones are completely new/independent? and which ones have cameos of old characters? I looked on different sites but couldn't find definite answers. If anyone could please help I'd be appreciative.

She has 4 series all set in the same "world". I read all of them -- practically back-to-back.

First I read the Protector of the Small series:
* First Test
* Page
* Squire
* Lady Knight

Then the Song of the Lioness quartet:
* Alanna
* In the Hand of the Goddess
* The Woman Who Rides Like a Man
* Lioness Rampant

Then the Immortals quartet:
* Wild Magic
* Wolf-speaker
* The Emperor Mage
* The Realms of the Gods

And lastly the Trickster duo:
* Trickster's Choice
* Trickster's Queen

From her web site, the recommendation is to read them chronologically:
-- Song of the Lioness
-- Immortals
-- Protector of the Small
-- Trickster

I see that there are two others set in this universe:
* Terrier
* Bloodhound

Guess I need to go out and find those.

Thanks so much. I sure hate having to track down that many books, but i've heard such good things about them.

I read a recommendation for Tamora Pierce on a feminist website and read everything our local library has of hers in quick succession! (I felt a bit funny elbowing the teens out of the way in the teenage section of the library but I'm over that now).
But you know what really sucks? Someone stole Page and Squire from the Protector of the Small series! Imagine stealing parts 2 & 3 of a 4 part series! :rant:

I didn't know that there was a second Trickster book, adding it to my wishlist (along with Terrier and Bloodhound) now. :D

There are also two quartets and two books set in another world, Emelan, which also follow one another:

The Circle of Magic:
*Magic Circle: Sandry's Book
*Magic Circle: Tris's Book
*Magic Circle: Daja's Book
*Magic Circle: Briar's Book

The Circle Opens:
*Magic Steps
*Street Magic
*Cold Fire
*Shatterglass

*The Will of the Empress
*The Melting Stones (I think this is only out in audiobook right now - they did a fancy pants full cast audio recording before publishing the print book)

I have to confess that I don't like these quite as much as the Tortall books, but that might just be because I started out in Tortall when all she had written was The Song of the Lioness. I must have checked those books out from the Jr. High library six times a piece in the three years I was there, I loved them so much. :rolleyes:

Both the Protector of the Small and Song of the Lioness series can be purchased in boxed sets from Amazon and brick-and-mortar bookstores. I think the Immortals quartet is also available in a boxed set. Of course, if you're trying to get them through the 2nd hand channels or your local library, then you do have a lot of individual books to find.

I found First Test at my sister's house and brought it home. Enjoyed it so much that I went online and ordered the rest of the series and the other two quartets (boxed sets where I could). A year or so later, I found a paperback copy of Trickster's Choice in a bookstore. Bought it, then went back to pick up Trickster's Queen in hardback.

Oh, yes. The other book stolen from the library was The Circle Opens:Shatterglass - the last book of eight. :rant:

After reading the Lioness Quartet and the Immortals (thanks, Karendawn!), her graphic novel White Tiger was a letdown.

This is the site I use when I want to know about what books are in series. I use it all the time.

I have a copy of Trickster's Queen (Sequel to Trickster's Choice) I am ready to pass on. If any of you would like it, to help complete your series, just drop me a note with your addy.

Please Note ~ It will be a couple weeks before I can mail it, still getting caught up from the holidays, but I will send it out as soon as is possible.
