When Ron runs away, he ends up in Bordertown, a grim city that lies between the real world and the world of faerie, a place where elf and human gangs stalk the streets side by side, and where magic works better than technology. If the city doesn't kill him, it just may teach him what it is to be human.

ELSEWHERE is the first story about Ron. His story continues in NEVERNEVER.

Growing up is hard to do...especially if, like Ron, you've been cursed (blessed?) and changed into a half wolf/half human. But though he may look strange, there is nothing weird about his loyalty to his newfound friends, or in his attempts to stay true to himself in the deadly, shifting world of Bordertown.

Book Description

There's a new vampire in town. His name is Valentine Maxwell. Goth-girl Raven knows this latest intruder can only mean trouble—he's the younger sibling of two vampires she fought to drive out of Dullsville. But when her brother, Billy, befriends this dangerous tween night prowler, the stakes are suddenly higher. Though torn by the excitement of every teen girl's fantasy—attending the prom with her boyfriend—Raven must do everything she can to protect Billy.

Valentine's appearance may pose even further threats. Could he somehow know Raven's innermost feelings about becoming immortal for her true love, Alexander? The far-from-ordinary romance of these two teen outsiders takes another surprise-filled spin in the fourth book of Ellen Schreiber's applauded Vampire Kisses series.

Review From Booklist

Phillis Wheatley, America's first black poet, was a child when purchased by John Wheatley in 1761, and her entrance into his Boston household marked the beginning of her unique position. She was educated, nurtured, and encouraged to write by the prominent Wheatleys, but was never considered an equal because of her color. It is Phillis' dilemma of belonging to neither the white nor the slave society that Rinaldi so well delineates. Obviously deeply researched, the novel abounds with details of colonial life--encounters the Wheatleys had with America's early historical figures as well as the effects of the day's politics on Mrs. Wheatley's campaign to get Phillis' poetry published. The poet's circumstances deteriorated after the deaths of the Wheatleys, and she died at age 30 in abject poverty, her husband in debtor's prison. In contemplating this quick decline, Rinaldi questions the motives of Phillis' mentors and friends--did they consider her a serious poet or a plaything, a parlor conversation piece? And did they properly prepare her for the attention she received for her poetry? It is difficult to know, and the author, fortunately, does not make judgments but leaves it up to readers to decide for themselves. Strong characterization and perceptive realism mark this thoughtful portrayal. Laura Tillotson

Song of the Sparrow by Lisa Ann Sandell

2007 Advanced Readers Copy - paperback

Written like poetry, but reads like prose. Very different legend of the Lady of Shallott. I really liked this one.

The year is 490 AD. Fiery 16-year-old Elaine of Ascolat, the daughter of one of King Arthur's supporters, lives with her father on Arthur's base camp, the sole girl in a militaristic world of men. Elaine's only girl companion is the mysterious Morgan, Arthur's older sister, but Elaine cannot tell Morgan her deepest secret: She is in love with Lancelot, Arthur's second-in-command. However, when yet another girl -- the lovely Gwynivere-- joins their world, Elaine is confronted with startling emotions of jealousy and rivalry. But can her love for Lancelot survive the birth of an empire?

Sisters in Sanity an ARCl by Gayle Forman

Book Description

Have you ever had the out-of-control dream? The one where you know you're not crazy, but no one around you—not your parents, not your teachers, not even the authorities—will listen to you?

For sixteen-year-old Brit Hemphill, the out-of-control dream comes true when her dad enrolls her at Red Rock, a bogus treatment center that claims to cure rebellious teen girls. At Red Rock, Brit is forced into therapy, and her only hope of getting her life back is in the hands of an underqualified staff of counselors. Brit's dad thinks Red Rock can save her, but the truth is it's doing more harm than good.

No girl could survive Red Rock alone—but at a treatment center where you earn privileges for ratting out your peers, it's hard to know who you can trust. For Brit, everything changes when she meets V, Bebe, Martha, and Cassie, four girls who keep her from going over the edge. Together they'll hold on to their sanity and their sisterhood while trying to keep their Red Rock reality from becoming a full-on nightmare.

Beast by Donna Jo Napoli

Orasmyn is a young Persian prince with all the privileges and responsibilities his royal position holds. But when he falters and makes a single wrong decision, his pride angers a pari -- a fairy -- who sets an ancient curse into motion, crucially changing his life on the worst day possible, and forcing him to leave his beloved Persia and his precious family in order to escape death at his father's unwitting hands. With all the cunning he can muster from his human memories and his new beastly instincts, Orasmyn makes his way to India and back, across Europe to France, in search of redemption and forgiveness. Beast is his story. A French beauty named Belle is his redeemer. And then you know the rest. But this is before the rest. This is the story of Beast.

Here is Beauty and the Beast as only Donna Jo Napoli can tell it. Like a mosaic-tile artisan, she juxtaposes the unexpected -- the exotic Middle East and the sensuous France, a courtly prince and a hulking lion, a ferocious beast and an undaunted young woman -- and weaves their flavors into her story of Orasmyn's plight, creating a new classic from the old, an epic that lingers like the scent of a rose.

The Year My Life Went Down The Loo
Katie Maxwell

Sixteen-year-old Emily Marie William's life seems to swirl down the loo (toilet) when she moves from Seattle, Washington, to Piddlington-on-the-Weld, England: not only the dark side of the universe, but a country that still has discos! While sharp-witted and clever-tongued Emily feels slighted by the forced relocation, the situation provides mucho drama, drool-worthy love interests and ubercoolio comedy. Emily's frantic e-mails to best friend Dru portray her spiraling descent-further exacerbated by placement in the fifth form (with younger classmates--gack!), school uniforms, an "ancient" but overly protective father, a dim-witted but well-meaning mother, a sexually progressive older sister, a perverted underwear drawer poltergeist, snickerers Ann and Bee, and Tash, a promiscuous competitor in Emily's quest to win the heart of hunkalicious Aidan (that is, if she doesn't decide to go for dishy Devon, marry heartthrob actor Oded Fehr, or forget them all and go for Fang first). Gripping, smart-alecky, shocking (not for teacher's pets or the fainthearted) and at the same time tender, Emily's trials and tribulations will inspire laughter, tears and an understanding of what it's like to be an American teenager in Britain, A brilliant debut by Katie Maxwell in the YA forum! Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson
user posted image
In an evocative and fast-paced adventure on the high seas and on a faraway island an orphan boy named Peter and his mysterious new friend, Molly, overcome bands of pirates and thieves in their quest to keep a fantastical secret safe and save the world from evil. Bestselling authors Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson have turned back the clock and revealed a wonderful story that precedes J. M. Barrie's beloved Peter Pan. Peter and the Starcatchers is brimming with richly developed characters from the scary but somehow familiar Black Stache and the ferocious Mister Grin to the sweet but sophisticated Molly and the fearless Peter. Riveting adventure takes listeners on a journey from a harsh orphanage in old England to a treacherous sea in a decrepit old tub. Aboard the Never Land is a trunk that holds a magical substance with the power to change the fate of the world - just a sprinkle and wounds heal and just a dusting and people can fly.

Towering seas and a violent storm are the backdrop for battles at sea. Bone-crushing waves eventually land our characters on Mollusk Island - where the action really heats up.

Lucky T by Kate Brian

A fairy tale set in India, this sweet yet predictable book ends happily ever after. Carrie, a talented, beautiful, selfish, yet likable teenager, is in Calcutta trying to track down her lucky T-shirt that was accidentally sent to a shelter there. This shirt is one of the few connections she has with her often-absent, divorced father. She makes the trip on the premise that she wants to build housing for the less fortunate, but definitely puts her search for her shirt first. She meets Dee, a gorgeous volunteer at an orphanage, and goes to work there, again for the wrong reasons. Dee and Carrie find themselves in an up-and-down relationship as she struggles with her materialism and his self-righteousness. Carrie grows to love the children and realizes how fortunate she is to have family, friends, and material things. Although the message is strong, the character development is somewhat lacking. Still, this is an enjoyable read in which the girl gets the guy, reconciles with her best friend, and learns what really matters most in her life.
