Atonement by Ian McEwan

On the hottest day of the summer of 1935, thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis sees her older sister Cecilia strip off her clothes and plunge into the fountain in the garden of their country house. Watching Cecilia is their housekeeper’s son Robbie Turner, a childhood friend who, along with Briony’s sister, has recently graduated from Cambridge.
By the end of that day the lives of all three will have been changed forever. Robbie and Cecilia will have crossed a boundary they had never before dared to approach and will have become victims of the younger girl’s scheming imagination. And Briony will have committed a dreadful crime, for which she will spend the rest of her life trying to atone.

I have started to read this book so I ought to be finished by the time the swap in over. The new movie is out soon so it wil be good to compare.

Book Lover by Jennifer Kaufman & Karen Mack

Some women shop. Some eat. Dora cures the blues in the comfort of her L.A. high rise by bingeing on books - shutting the door on the outside world until she emerges strong enough to face her problems. Now her life has fallen apart, all she has left is her love of literature and the book benders she relied on when, as a child, her larger-than-life father wandered away and she and her sister were left with an alcoholic mother. She's coping with a painful separation from her husband, scraping the bottom of a dwindling inheritance and attracted to a seductive guy who works in her local bookstore. He seems to embody all that literature has to offer - but life is more complicated and real people aren't as compliant as the characters in novels..."

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!!! :bananacheer:

KathyB - January 1, 2008 02:24 PM (GMT)
I knew I had to drive and I knew the cops would be out in full force last night, so I only had one beer and then a glass of champagne at midnight. Went and saw Kevin Fowler which, if you like country songs that are a little bit naughty, was an awesome way to bring in the new year.

AceofHearts - January 1, 2008 03:16 PM (GMT)
Good Morning. I shared 1/2L of wine with DH and am fine. Or as fine as normal :giggle:

Morning :)

giz-angel - January 1, 2008 03:38 PM (GMT)
So none of us are completely wrecked then? Oh Marleney I agree about the medication and also the age thing :giggle: of course you know more about that than me! Go on, whip me now! But my tolerance for alcohol is way down on how it used to be :erm: and I seem to suffer for far longer.

Anyway I should have left some moves but I didn't  so I will when I go again

None of us? Speak for yourself, dear... :giggle:

I guess large quantities of beer + wine + chapagne is not a good combination after all... :sick2:

And about age versus tolerance, I couldn't have said better. I am suffering today way more than I used to when I was in my twenties. Guess it's time to cut down on the alcohol...

Aw poor stellar  I hate hangovers. Until I forget how bad they are and drink lots.

Think I shall have some rootbeer now it's much nicer than the real stuff :giggle:

Poor Stella. :flowers: here you might prefer this :coffee:

I am feeling oke again. Just felt lousy in the night and when I woke up.

Maybe I also notice it much more is because I never drink.
My God I am proud of myself.

I had a phase where every evening I drank 2 beers but I think I drink 6 beers in 1 year now.
so my body is not used to it, but boy I needed it and I had so much fun on my own.

Giz I don't think you need to leave moves.
Or maybe you do. You have a great book next to your name of course
