Title: SFF People - Fantasy vs. Sci-Fi
Description: Enough interest for separate swaps?
shaunesay - December 17, 2007 05:43 PM (GMT)
I'm just curious what your thoughts are, if separating these swaps would get more players for each one, or fewer. Anyone who would like to play is welcome to vote, since I wonder if there are people who don't play now because they only like one or the other. Or if we wanted to try something like what Cheesy has been doing with the mystery swaps, and making every other mystery swap a cozy swap, we could do something similar?
I guess lets judge interest in separate swaps first, and then we could see what the schedule could be.

lol I would play in all of the above...so I clicked all of the above (was that wrong? it said all that would apply to me...)
though some months i'd prefer more fantasy over science fiction (I am honestly a mostly fantasy girl, with occasional forays into science fiction)

I would play in either. I think it would be interesting to have an occasional Fantasy-only or SF-only swap. My reading pattern has been much more toward SF than Fantasy, but I am now reading more Fantasy, so I would have something to offer in a dedicated swap.

Except the general mystery swaps are pretty much cozy swaps too
I used to love science fiction, but I'm not much of a fantasy fan. I'm so out of the loop though I doubt what I offered would be stolen.

| What is a cozy swap? |
cozy mysteries are a particular sub genre of mystery. Cheesy has one swap be all cozy mystery genre, then the next would be any mystery type.

I prefer Science Fiction but in the SFF swaps there is usually an abuncance of Fantasy.
I would love to see an occasional straight Sci-fi swap.
But would also still participate in the Fantasy swaps.

were you also the one vote for keeping them combined? If so, then you are just confused!

There needs to be an I don't know.

I'll add to my above answer by saying I can't always tell the difference. Okay, stuff like Harry Dresden, Kim Harrison, Simon R. Green, the Kitty books by Carrie Vaughn.... all those are definitely Urban Fantasy as opposed to just straight fantasy, and usually have an element of the paranormal to them as well, which is why I include them in the PUF swap. Overall, that is my most favorite-ist of sub-genres, the one I enjoy the most.
I don't care for Epic fantasy all that much. I believe that's what Pepper said it was called, the type of Fantasy in which the protagonist goes off on a quest to another realm, etc.
And though I have some Sci-Fi books, I really don't have all that many and only a few books in that genre really appeal to me. I'm thinking the Ender books which I read a couple of, and the Midnighters series by Scott Westerfeld. Is that actually Sci-Fi or Fantasy? I'm thinking the former.

I would play in whichever I had a new book for that month, lol. I like keeping them combined cause I like both SciFi and Fantasy.

So what if we did something like monthly, but rotated Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Combined, etc.? Would peeps like that? Too often?
PepperVL - December 18, 2007 03:42 AM (GMT)
I'm game for it. I know I wouldn't play in every Sci-Fi one because I'm more of a fantasy girl myself, but I would play if I had something to offer.

The book I had this time (The Margarets) could have been either I guess?? I think some books really are straight this or that, but there are ones that I have a hard time telling apart - then I could put it in either one?? I'm already confused.

I've thought about that, and kind of figured that as long as it had a strong line of the main element (either Sci-Fi or Fantasy) then I would allow it in whichever swap. Since I think there would be a lot of crossover of players.

or you could say to save the ones that are iffy either way for the combined swap. Rotating the months sci-fi, fantasy, then combined seems fair.
Oh, I didn't vote because I don't read enough of any of these to make it worth it for me!

In my mind, from reading the description, the Margarets would have been Sci-Fi. I know the line isn't always easy to define though!
