OK it's time for sign up (after some suggestions to leave enough time to find a new copy if needed). Swap is scheduled for January 10th
For those who don't know:
- the main thing is to offer one of three best books you've read this year ('till 31st Dec) which means :nono: TBRs!
- no genre restriction!
- since this should be swap with best books it would be against its "spirit" self revealing and stealing your own book.

 Ah yes. At first i didn't know what move? I forgot it was you (although I saw you were not the only one).
No I'm not upset. I told you I don't wanna stepping on anyones toes, just expressing opinion () BUT I'm using my "right" as a host to include it in swaps I'm organizing (not "every swap"). Again I hope I'm not stepping on someone's toes

geishabird - December 15, 2007 03:48 PM (GMT)
Definitely! I have a great book to offer. (As I recall, it was avidly stolen in another swap earlier this year... )

sorry, by every I meant the ones you were hosting, ya'll are so good at English, the rest of us get lazy in details sometimes. ;)

But think about the fact that sometimes those moves are used for good too, they aren't necessarily "I'm taking my toys and going home" I've had several people steal their own books from me because they felt bad that their book had not been stolen and wanted to give me a chance to play too.

It is totally your swap and I understand why it can be viewed as "not in the spirit" but at the same time, you're banning some considerate options for people on moves they could make. :2cents: It just kind of made me feel like when you started posting that that I'd scarred you for life with my historical fiction move!

Sunlightbub - December 15, 2007 04:09 PM (GMT)
I'm in :)

BTW I've never self revealed but I have stolen my own book before

Oh but that's the only case stealing your own book is OK.
If you check first post on Afrikan Swap you'll see ("unless someone get really stuck with your reveal"). I didn't include it here because it's really hard to believe that anyone will be stuck with someone's reveal. However if it happens self-stealing will be acceptable :)

I remember my first YBS poor Turtle was SO stuck with my reveal and I wanted to steal it but everyone started to "scream" It's against the rule!!! and then Turtle said that actually he's satisfied with the book (I think he was only polite). BTW it's a fabulous novel.
So for years I thought that was forbidden. But indeed it's totally justified in that case. However if you use it in tactic to get another book I don't like that. Especially if there are more players who want that book. You're adding another steal and decrease chances for others who'd like to take it out of the game. Hope that makes sense (it does for me).

boogal - December 15, 2007 04:33 PM (GMT)
I'd like to play, please.

Marlene - December 15, 2007 04:39 PM (GMT)
Well I remember feeling sad because someone was stuck with my book for ages.
it was my turn and I was in the running for 3 books that I wanted, but I felt so shitty for the person stuck with my reveal, i decided I would steal it.

Well near the end, the 3 books I wanted were of course gone, that person stole my book from me

so I am not going to steal my own book anymore.

spiderchic - December 15, 2007 04:41 PM (GMT)
May I play please. I have a good book I've just finished.

It makes sense, but it's not any worse than stealing something that's on 3, JUST because you know it's popular and want another chance at a book you lost. THAT is done a lot. Everyone plays differently. I guess your new rule just hurt a bit after I thought about it because it felt like I had caused a "how not to swap" rule in a way, and I've always considered myself an "in the spirit of things" player.

Again, it's neither here nor there, it's your swap and your rules, but you usually speak up when something bothers you, so I knew you would understand if I did. :)

Breeze - December 15, 2007 04:47 PM (GMT)

Oh shaunie but the way I see it, it's not the same. It's actually as if you're offering book with max# of steals 3 or 4.
I'm really sorry you've taken that so personally. I'd like to remind you that you asked others what they think before you've made your move and only I (as always) objected. Also as I said I saw others do the same. (but aren't you self-reveled yourself and not steal your own book?)
I don't know ... I can't explain better ... the way I see it, it looks like a trick or I don't know and since recently that happens a lot I decided to include in the rules.

And of course I understand. With me always honestly and straight what you think without faking (disagreements are part of the fun anyway :P)
You're not playing?

shaunesay - December 15, 2007 05:18 PM (GMT)
nope, I'm trying to be good and only play in the genre swaps that I'm REALLY in the mood for, since I'm using TBR's quite often and don't want to get myself in deeper book debt than I'm already in!

Yes, I was self-revealed in that one, and I did ask what people thought because I wanted to avoid bad feelings. Well, *I've* never really found disagreements fun to be honest, but to each his own! ;)

I just wanted to put my feelings on it out there, so I did!

I've started swapping only last month, and I am still getting the hang of it. I've done it that you mentioned in one of the swaps I took part, and I never had a clue it would be taken badly. I thought it was good strategy.

By the way, I'm not playing the Best Of because I already reserved all my favorites. But I'll be checking this swap every now and then to see the titles. Seer curiosity. :giggle:

msjoanna - December 15, 2007 05:28 PM (GMT)
I'm in. I have to choose between two books...

I did once steal my own book in an erotica swap because it was the first one revealed and not stolen through the whole game. I usually try to check with the person holding it to see if it's liked or not. Particularly since I'm trying not to play with too many TBRs, I'd sometimes rather take my own book back than feel obliged to offer someone the chance to pick a TBR from my shelf.

But I understand the point you're making, zzz.

Marlene - December 15, 2007 05:32 PM (GMT)
I have to see if I can get a book zzz.
which means checking the books I have read this year and see which ones I liked best. Problem with that is, books I really liked I mostly keep in my PC. except if it was registered by another BCer.

so got to do some research.

I can swear there was Marlene's reply as well but it vanished.
Once again: I think it's OK to steal your own book if someone is stuck with it and by that allow him/her to play. And for the use in strategic purpose as I said the way I see it, it looks like a trick or (now I'll quote myself)

I don't know how better to explain. If you'd like to comment this PLEASE read my explications from previous posts so I don't have to go back on the things I already wrote about.
It's not taken badly or whatever. I simply don't like this new trend and that's why I posted that rule.
I really hope there'll be no need to quote quotes anymore.
:)

cheesygiraffe - December 15, 2007 06:40 PM (GMT)
Put me down as a maybe Milan. ;) You're hosting the swap so you get to make your rules. I see both sides as good points. :)

Marlene - December 15, 2007 06:57 PM (GMT)
Yes I did write something, but with the sensitive mood I am in now, I do not want to be misunderstood, trapping on toes, or someone to be pissed off at me, so I decided to for the first time delete a post.
I am not a fighter like you are zzz. To worried people do not like me anymore, or me hurting people plus I feel inadequate in discussions because of my English. Can't find the right words to express myself.

I said I understand that it is good strategy cause if nobody steals your book, you do not have to send a book. If you steal someone else's , trying to be strategical going for another one, you might end up with that one and not with the one you want but still having to send your book.
I understand but for me it just does not feel really right.

Anyways this is a good deal. You can steal your own book if someone is stuck with it and you feel sorry, but you don't have to!! (I hope ;) )

Well, when I saw the number of posts in this thread I thought we have a lot more sign ups/.

Well, I have been waiting a whole year for this swap so I am not missing it even if I were going to Africa! And months ago I have read a great book and know that it belongs in this swap so it has been sitting on my shelf since then, despite ocassions I could have passed it on.

So in other words, I am all set and waiting for the count down!

In some way I've done the same thing. Whenever I finish some book I'm thinking would it be OK for this swap. I also have picked mine. However if I found English translation of other I'll probably offer that one.

PepperVL - December 16, 2007 12:34 AM (GMT)
This swap always sounds like so much fun, but I couldn't possibly pick even close to the best book I've read, much less get my hands on a copy of one.

As for stealing your own book...

The only time I've ever done that was in the last Teen Swap and it wasn't for any of the reasons mentioned yet.

There was one reveal left in the game. The books I was interested in had been stolen out of play. I stole my own reveal because that was the book I was going to be happiest with at that point in time.

I didn't want to ask for the last reveal because I was relatively certain it wasn't going to be something I wanted. I'd very recently looked over that person's shelf and knew that there wasn't anything on it that I was interested in (I had actually just won a book from them in another swap and told them not to worry about sending me anything), so though I didn't know what the reveal was, I also was relatively sure that it wasn't going to be something I was particularly interested in.

I was also not interested in anything left in play.

So I stole from myself because that was what would make me happiest at that point in time.

I can see revealing myself under similar circumstances. If you swap a lot, you get to know whose reveals you tend to like and whose reveals you tend not to want. It's not certain, of course, but you get a feel for it. If I hadn't been revealed, there were no books I could steal that I was interested in, and no one not revealed who I felt there was a good chance I would want their book... I might reveal myself. In a swap where it wasn't specifically forbidden, of course.

catsalive - December 16, 2007 01:28 AM (GMT)
As zzz's rule is stated up front there can't be any confusion during the game so I'm happy with that :2cents: :P

I'm suffering swap withdrawal. My last was the SSS & this will be my next... almost a whole month in between. :chained: :scream:
