Title: 2008 Reading Goals
noumena12 - December 9, 2007 11:14 PM (GMT)
Has anyone started setting goals for 2008? I'm looking for ideas!
chambejd - December 10, 2007 12:52 AM (GMT)
Well, I'm going to try a few goals that I didn't do so well on this year. I really want to try to eliminate my owed TBR pile so that I can read books that I have received from other BC'ers. I also want to start a few series that I haven't touched yet, like The #1 Ladies Det. Agency and Patterson's Women's Murder Club, not to mention the Stephanie Plum series (though I did read the first one this year). I'm also going to try to limit the bookrays/rings that I join.
terrafreaky - December 10, 2007 01:00 AM (GMT)
I've moved all of the books I registered with BCID's that start with 3 (3xxxxxx) to my bedroom. My plan is to read or let go of all of those "3" books by the end of 2008. The majority of them are from 2005, time for them to get moving.
EllyMae58 - December 10, 2007 01:04 AM (GMT)
To clear the shelves of books I've received from other BCers is goal number one, whether that means to read it or just to get it moving again. I've finally separated them into their own shelf, and was able to clear a few in the last month.
My other goal is to clear out some hardbacks. They've built up again and I hate them taking up space.
I won't be counting reads next year for a change. Less focus on numbers, more on just reading and enjoying.
cheesygiraffe - December 10, 2007 01:14 AM (GMT)
I have no goals other than to read what I want. :)
shaunesay - December 10, 2007 01:26 AM (GMT)
I'm thinking about fewer goals, for less pressure! maybe count by pages instead of # of books, or maybe not count anything at all, haven't decided yet!

Oh yeah, moving out hardbacks is a goal of mine as well.
I will still count the number of books I read but I am not setting a goal number.
PepperVL - December 10, 2007 01:35 AM (GMT)
Well, I would REALLY like to get Mount TBR down to 50 books or less. However, my other goal is to not worry about things so much, so...
As for counting books... Well I use a spreadsheet, and track when I start and finish books, so... It's easy to count. But I won't be setting a number goal.
stellarv - December 10, 2007 02:01 AM (GMT)
I'm on the opposite way... For the first time in my life I'll start counting the books I read, and if I read an average of 5 books a month, I should be able to set my reading goal to 60 books throughout 2008, which is fairly reasonable for me.
I am also going to take part in the Read and Realease Ultimate Challenge from Bookcrossing, which I'll try to reconcile with the European Writers Challenge, if possible.
This will be my first year counting books and taking part in guided challenges. I'm very excited! :woot2:

luckaye - December 10, 2007 02:28 AM (GMT)
My goals for 2008:
1. Read at least 100 books
2. Wild release 366 books for BC challenge (will make hubby happy!)
3. Read 20 of the 1001 books (included in the 100 above!)
4. Read & send TBR books in a timely manner
5. Not join so many swaps! (maybe *grin*)
6. Read & release books that have been hanging around for a couple of years, esp. those from other BCers
caligula03 - December 10, 2007 03:22 AM (GMT)
I'm hoping to continue to read at a book a day like I've done this year. I would also like to release 400 books. (I've released 387 this year). On the the flip side, I would like to only take in about 100 books.
noumena12 - December 10, 2007 03:24 AM (GMT)
I've been replacing my hardbacks with paperbacks slowly all year. Hardbacks are just too hard from me to take on airplanes and to carry around. Maybe I'll make that a goal. I've still got quite a few.
I'll have to check out the Read and Release Ultimate Challenge.
I keep thinking I'll get rid of some of my older books I look at them and think...but I still want to read that sometime. Maybe I'll just have to pass it on and come back to it again later. I really would like to eliminate the double stacking on my shelves.

I always thought the solution to that was buy more bookshelves...
AlterEgoZoe - December 10, 2007 03:34 AM (GMT)
Um, to get as many of my TBR(non-bc and bc piles) read before I get more books, get most of my books out of my house if they've been sitting here for months and months (which is about 99.9% of them), and some how manage to send those books that are for overseas BCers and stop negelcting them..

I was hoping to read a book a day this year. Started out on target but work slowed me down. I have released 429 books so far this year.
If you figure out how to only take in 100 books, please let me know. Unfortunately, 495 new books made their way into my house. I'm definitely NOT keeping up! :(

No room!!!
ramson - December 10, 2007 05:24 AM (GMT)
I think my original goal for this year was 125 and has since been lowered to a more managable 100 which I should hit. Not sure what my goal for next year will be at this point. I know I want to read more than 100. I think 10 books a month is pretty realistic number for me which would be 120 books for 2008. On the other hand I find myself (especially at this time of year) over looking the longer volumes that I may really want to read because they will slow down the numbers goal in favor of short quick reads.
I know I am looking forward to January of 2008 because I want to start on Outlander and read the whole series. I have read the first three and a half books in the series but that was over ten years ago so think I need a refresher so I want to go back to book one. Its kind of the same thing with the Harry Potter books. I've read the first four and I want to read the rest but its been so long I feel like I need to go back to the beginning so I can remember everything. (I haven't seen the movies and don't want to until I've read all the books so that's not an option.) I'd also like to read Gone With The Wind again. Its my all time favorite and I haven't read it in a good 10 years. I generally don't reread a book I've already read but these are exceptions and exceptions I expect to take up a good portion of my reading time. ...or I could find out that I really don't like to read the same stuff now that I loved 10 years ago and chuck it all.
I've done really well with owed books this year( as in there aren't any right now) and I'd like to keep up with that. Its very nice to read what I want to read when I want to read it.
I will have to give this some thought before the new year starts and its time to start listing things on 43things.
candieb - December 10, 2007 06:59 AM (GMT)
I dunno. I thought this year I would do good to read 50, but I passed 100. I thought I wouldn't have time, but instead my refuge became books. I would like to get my TBR back down a bit so I have a full open shelf again. But I know that won't happen, so let's just say to NOT have to double stack my shelves because I can probably actually do that LOL! I'll probably shoot for 100 books again :)
Amberkatze - December 10, 2007 07:37 AM (GMT)
I will keep my goal from this year and aim to read more books in 2008 than in 2007. Although I think I am outdoing myself this year so I wonder if I can make it next year.
I also want to reach 3,000 books registered by the end of 2008. So if anyone wants to help me with that please do ;)
I would also like to see 'my' bookrings that I have travelling around coming home. It would be nice to have all of the ones out there actually back with me by the end of 2008 (except for AWOL ones of course *sigh*).
camis - December 10, 2007 08:06 AM (GMT)
For next year my goals are
1. Read 125 books (should hit 110 this year)
2. NOT use TBR's in swaps and VBB's
3. Reduce my TBR's from other BCer's to under 50
4. Read at least 20 books form the 1001 books list
5. Take part in the Release 366 books challenge (or whatever it's called - can't remember!)
6. Have at least 1000 books registered on my BC shelf
That should keep me busy!
Sunlightbub - December 10, 2007 09:32 AM (GMT)
1) Don't offer any TBR's in Swaps etc
2) Have no owed TBR's ( See above)
3) Read and pass on 50 plus books I've received from other BCers
4) Read 100 plus books
I'm also going to try to avoid buying too many books, and not mooch anymore until I've made some room!
boogal - December 10, 2007 10:21 AM (GMT)
1. Finish reading all my Owed TBRs.
2. Don't add to the Owed TBR list.
3. Read and pass along 50 TBRs.
Marlene - December 10, 2007 10:51 AM (GMT)
* Read more books that I already have. (The TBR's)
* Don't buy so many books as I did in 2007
* Read more (My goal was 100 in 2007 and I will barely make it)
* Send out swap books fast so I can play in more.
* Read some different genres, Discover new authors
This year I had not set any goals, besides buying more books. and I managed to do that most definitely

Don't be jealous! Just make it your goal, too. :)
Next year for me is going to be stressful. I'm going to need to kick my dissertation work into high gear. Also at the end of next year I plan to go on the job market (which for academia is MUCH more than just sending out resumes). So I honestly don't think I'm going to have much time to read. Setting any type of goal will just add more stress to me and I really don't need that next year! So when I do have time to read, I want to just enjoy the book I'm reading and not worry about any counting or releasing or anything of that nature.
apolonia - December 10, 2007 02:37 PM (GMT)
Well I will probably aim for 100 books this year. The closest I've come since keeping track was 2005, I read approx. 89 books. 2006 I read 41 and 2007 I read 46. I would like to hit this goal someday. I am also going to attempt Shauney's 365 release challenge. I'm open to any other interesting ideas though. I love challenges. Although my 43 things is full, I may have to accomplish one of my other goals.
nvangel2073 - December 10, 2007 02:44 PM (GMT)
One of these year I would really like to read my 100 books.
bluecat07 - December 10, 2007 03:01 PM (GMT)
My goal is to read 80 books next year. This year I will finish around 60...
I also first want to read all the owed books and send them and then read and get some of the books of other BCers moving. But I don't want to put too much pressure on myself. First have to survive our moving houses and then see how much space for books there will be... :D
Daelith - December 10, 2007 03:30 PM (GMT)
I'm not going to set a number to get read for 2008 as I did this year even though I passed my goal. Other than reducing BC and borrowed TBRs, I'm just going go with Cheesy and Karen and read what I want. Since most all of those are stuff I wanted to read, it shouldn't be a problem. If I make 100 by the end of the year, yah for me. :P If not,
alsgal - December 10, 2007 03:50 PM (GMT)
I think next year I'm going to focus on getting rid of books sent to me by other BCers. Especially the older ones. I successfully got through the few I had left from 2005 this year, now to tackle the 28 I have from 2006.
I really tried to read more of the books I received from other BCers this year but I ended up with 5 more than I had at the beginning of the year (at least I got rid of some of the older ones ). But, like others, this year I'm going to clean out my shelves and release/RABCk some of those that I no longer am interested in reading.
I did do a good job on my TBL pile though. I started 2007 with 30 audios and now I'm down to 9 (only 2 I didn't register)
Good luck to everyone on your goals for next year!
noumena12 - December 10, 2007 10:33 PM (GMT)
I created a
goal on 43things.com for the
2008 Bookcrossing Ultimate Release Challenge! Please join me!
sejent - December 10, 2007 10:36 PM (GMT)
I have never set a goal for books read and have not kept really good track of the books I read (except for the last six months or so). I have been reading an average of about 4 books per month, so I decided to set a goal of 50 books for 2008. I'm pretty confident that I can achieve that, since this year's books included some pretty hefty ones (the entire Outlander series, for example).
giz-angel - December 10, 2007 10:44 PM (GMT)
100 books again which I haven't managed this year, and 5 of those from the BBC top 100. That's it!
CheriePie - December 10, 2007 10:45 PM (GMT)
I'll join up in the 100 books for 2008 for next year even though I've yet to reach it even once over the last 3 years! :angry2:
But for me, it's more of just a PLAY ALONG goal. If I don't make it, I don't care and I don't stress over it.
I guess my real reading goals would be, and they're already ones I'm working on now, is to pare down owed TBRs and not play with anymore TBRs in Swaps and VBBs. Since I'm already following this "rule" and have also stopped joining as many bookrings (I'm still on a few), I seem to be putting a dent in that goal slightly, and will continue to work on it in 08.
AceofHearts - December 10, 2007 11:08 PM (GMT)
I have a few book challenges I am working on in 2008 but they are for fun only and if I don't make. OH WELL
noumena12 - December 10, 2007 11:17 PM (GMT)
I don't stress over my goals either. I just like to set them and see how I do against them. In 2006, I read 340 books. This year I'll be lucky to read 300. Oh well!
stellarv - December 10, 2007 11:32 PM (GMT)
I do not intend on stressing about goals either. Specially because it will be my first year accounting readings and joining Book Challenges at BC.
January is near and i haven't thought about even a single one that matches the month's theme for the Ultimate Challenge. Guess I am already too relaxed...

I'll be on vacation between Christmas and New Year's so my plan is to make a plan for the release challenge then. At least this might help drive me to what books I read! :)
