Title: How bad were you?
Description: Adding to Mt. TBR
caseyw - January 21, 2007 10:21 PM (GMT)
I had every intention of trying to behave myself at our meet-up yesterday. I was only going to allow myself a couple of books. Instead I left with 13. :( Okay, four of them I grab because I thought I could move them along and they are marked as available.
To make matters worse, I bought 3 from the library's discard section before going to the meet-up.
16 books total yesterday and not a single one was even a wishlist book.
karendawn - January 21, 2007 10:30 PM (GMT)
I've had a bunch of wishlist books popping up on PaperBackSwap in the past couple of weeks. Let me go count...there are 7 that are in the mail to me and since the beginning of the year, I've received another 13 wishlist books and 17 that weren't originally on my wishlist. Eek! And then my husband and I went to Half Price Books in Indy yesterday and I bought another 4 wishlist books (plus one knitting book and a dissertation book). *sigh* And I was trying hard to cut down on Mount TBR.
I did pull off about a dozen books from Mount TBR that have been sitting there for too long unread, but that still doesn't balance out.
cheesygiraffe - January 21, 2007 10:32 PM (GMT)
I have been good. Just a few wishlist books this month from PBS and Bookmooch. Maybe 4 all together. I tell you whose buying lots of books. Our new Admin Sand! Shhh I didn't tell you. hehe
Marlene - January 21, 2007 10:36 PM (GMT)
Lol. Here I was thinking this topic was about had bad we were during our teenage eyars.
I thought i could share some experience.
(I only read the How Bad were you?)
Casey you are a disgrace!!! :o :P
PepperVL - January 21, 2007 10:43 PM (GMT)
I have bought only ONE book this year - and I have unspent B&N gift cards in my wallet.
I have not joined any swaps.
I have only accepted ONE review assignment, and that hasn't come yet.
I've recieved one RABCK - a complete surprise.
I've read 11 books this year.
And yet, somehow, Mount TBR is only 2 books smaller than it was on January 1.

Hmmm...we might need to start another thread just to get Marlene to share her stories.
Yep, I admit it...I'm a disgraceful book whore. I have no will power to resist books. :P
geishabird - January 22, 2007 03:15 AM (GMT)
Gawd, I've been so good...my mantra so far this year has been:
"I will NOT go to the library used bookstore...I will NOT go to the library used bookstore..."
Three weeks under my belt; how much longer can I hold out?
(Did I mention that the library has a *really* good used bookstore?)
camis - January 22, 2007 11:50 AM (GMT)
I haven't bought anything - but Mount TBR has grown rather due to the sweeps books!
yourotherleft - January 22, 2007 03:16 PM (GMT)
The best library used book sale in my area was on Saturday...I'd been missing going to it for a long time (being at school or out of town for other reasons), but I was actually here for this one. I walked away with 23 books to add to the stunningly high peaks of Mt. TBR. There's certainly no more room left on the shelves for them...so they're all stashed in a box by my desk. So I've been bad...very bad. But it feels so good!

Ahem! I saw that Miss Cheese! :whip:
I've only bought a FEW wishlist books and a FEW non-wishlist books.
And hey... most of that was CTGMOM's fault... heck, she's going to HPB again today!!! :o
nwpassage - January 22, 2007 04:03 PM (GMT)
Well a couple weeks ago the Big Deals thrift store had a week-long 2-for-1 book sale that my boyfriend specifically forbid me to go to... I held out till the last day, and bought 53 books (3 were for him!) It took me a couple days and I finally confessed, he forgave me, but told me that seriously I need to slow down with the acquisitions (or speed up with the reading).
I just couldn't resist! Someone had donated a whole ton of like-new Buffy series books some time ago, but I just couldn't justify them at the store's regular prices... but at 2-for-1 I grabbed what was left, I think 26 of what I bought was like-new Buffy paperbacks.

JEALOUS!!!! *drool*
Megi53 - January 22, 2007 04:48 PM (GMT)
On a scale of 1 to 10, I've been a "5" so far this year. (i.e., as bad as usual)
I had to buy a textbook (nearly $80; wasted most of the Amazon certificate I got for Christmas).
I went into Maxway which is always perilous 'cause they have a rack of series mysteries for $1 each -- got 2 David Cole books (#3 and #5 in the series, I believe, which of course forces me to buy #1, #2, and #4 whenever I see them ... right? )
I joined a BC challenge to read books set in all 50 U.S. states, and while I was buying a (boring!!) book about Vermont at the UBS, I spotted Samurai's Garden by Gail Tsukiyama on the same shelf. Who could possibly have left without buying it?? :P
Today I'm going to the library to check out London Is the Best City in America by Laura Dave 'cause it's set in Rhode Island.
This month I sent out something like 40 books in two bookboxes and 6 (I think) RABCKs, but somehow I have more "piles" outside the bookshelves than I did before. Next time I make up a bookbox, I should put thicker books in.
SandDanz - January 22, 2007 05:00 PM (GMT)
well, I'll admit that I've been pretty bad already this year, but seriously it's because when I'm stressed/upset, the only thing that makes me feel better is buying books. I am trying to transition that to organizing my library though (4 new bookcases recently! :bananadance: ). Also, I am weeding out stuff that I know I'm not going to read from Mt. TBR, so eventually I'll probably be offering up books for postage, but it'll be a bit as I need to catch up on mailings that I already owe people as I want to rid myself of that guilt!
Sunlightbub - January 22, 2007 07:01 PM (GMT)
I've bought one book this month - for £1 from the charity shop ;)
AlterEgoZoe - January 22, 2007 07:07 PM (GMT)
I caved and used my $50 Barnes and Nobles card. I bought: Dungeon Master's Guide V. 3.5 II, The Princess Bride, Cirque du Soleil 2007 Planner and a Cat bookmark.
I also got these in the last week or so: Knave of Dreams (Free Book--it needs a new cover though), 2 Louise Cooper books(non-wishlist), 2 horror books, 1 Terry Prachett book (these last five all for $3.40!!!) and I also bought 2 Anne Rice books and 1 other horror book at Sally's for under $5.
I know I'm evil... :bash:
Ri - January 22, 2007 07:25 PM (GMT)
I haven't bought any books yet this year. I was dreading the thought of having to move them!! I will also be living so much closer to the library, like 2 blocks away, so I hope to be checking out more books and buying less as well!
Tribefan - January 22, 2007 07:38 PM (GMT)
I don't want to talk about it! :P :D

LOL! It didn't look like you were taking that many!!! And really, you were not as bad as some people. I think we're all a bad influence on each other that way! (but I love it)
I am proud to say that I only walked away from the very same Meet-Up with 3 books (almost a record for me) - but it wasn't easy limiting myself so severely!!
I did buy more than you at the FOL shelf at the library though - 4 there.
I haven't bought any from a bookstore (used or otherwise) this year yet but I do have some gift cards I am itching to use!
dancing-dog - January 22, 2007 07:57 PM (GMT)
And LOL, just wait until the FOL sale this weekend .... The diminishing of Mt. TBR is doomed I think!
wss4 - January 22, 2007 10:12 PM (GMT)
I am always bad. But I can say that I don't typically buy books unless it is at the Hospice Attic where they are 50 cents each or a yard sale where I can get them cheap. I have had a lot of wish list books come up on PBS & Bookmooch lately so they of course are en route. My DH says that I will never in my lifetime read all of my TBR books. I am beginning to wonder myself, but I can not pass up a book that looks like a good read. lol
caligula03 - January 23, 2007 08:07 AM (GMT)
Last month I took 8 books and brought home 8 books. For the month of January so far, I have released 4 more books than I've brought in! :bananadance:
giz-angel - January 23, 2007 12:36 PM (GMT)
I got another M bag so it's not my fault!!!!! But since the books I bought with my Christmas book voucher I've not bought any :D And any I have mooched or got from Ebay are for other people so they don't count. But my TBR is terrifying
KarinAlyssa - January 23, 2007 02:43 PM (GMT)
I've been quite good ! I haven't bought myself any books and since I can go to meetups because of class, nothing happened there! I'm even contemplating lowering my participation in swaps, so I have the time to read and maybe wild release around the campus.
ladyjanet - January 23, 2007 05:03 PM (GMT)
Since Christmas- 110 books wild released or given away, and 4 or 5 in from VBB's Zooba, Rings, etc.
MT. TBR is shaping up. I've pulled out all the "probably won't read after all" easy to reach books, so now I have to move all the "definitely will read" books to get to all the old ones underneath that have probably been there since I moved in 7 years ago! Then I should have about 100 more to go, and a reasonable TBR.
The library has their booksale next week- I'm only shopping for DH, books for the VBBs, Reading Divas and exchanges. Nothing for me! (Well, I'll try my best anyway.)
Sunlightbub - January 26, 2007 05:24 PM (GMT)
I'd done very well until today - the charity shop had 4 books for a £
caseyw - January 26, 2007 08:07 PM (GMT)
I keep telling myself I don't need to go to the library sale this weekend. I hope dancing-dog will call or email me and tell me it's not worth fooling with.
cheesygiraffe - January 26, 2007 08:08 PM (GMT)
Man I wish I lived closer to Memphis I'd be there with you Casey.
chambejd - January 26, 2007 09:07 PM (GMT)
I've been pretty good... I haven't purchased any books since mid-December. My goal is to make it through 2007 without purchasing ANY books. I have no problem avoiding the retail book stores, but the thrift stores are my weakness.
The problem is that I get a lot of (great) free books from our local recycling center. It also doesn't help that I participate in swaps and vbbs where I get a book for every book that I give. I need to send out more RABCKs!

Ha! If I told you that I'd have to be telling myself the same thing!
We're hopeless! :bash:

This is a smaller library outside of Memphis but it is nice.
The one you would really like to hit up here is the main library sale some time in May or June.
dancing-dog - Yep, I know it hopeless. :P I did manage to cull one more out of my tbr pile and move it to available. Yeah me!! Like that really made a dent. *snicker*
chambejd - I'm the same way with thrift stores, ubs and library sales. I have more fun looking for books at them than at a retail store for some reason.

Hi Megi ~
Re: Samuri's Garden - Gail Tsukiyama
 I read this six months ago ... it was excellent! Every time I read one of her books I am tempted to clear the reading decks and read every single one of her titles in a row. Her Women of the Silk was superb!
Thanks for bringing up her name - I'll pop into the library and get her into my reading stack soon.
ladyjanet - January 28, 2007 06:45 AM (GMT)
ok- bad!
I bought 4 books on amazon..
no wishlist books though, so that's good... right??? I can count that as good???
Ri - January 28, 2007 09:09 PM (GMT)
I bought a wishlist book today (my first book purchase of the year) - Gods in Alabama. I couldn't resist! There was an excellent copy at Goodwill today, so I snagged it!
caseyw - January 29, 2007 01:34 AM (GMT)
Well I behaved this weekend and didn't go to the library sale this weekend. They're going to have another one in March. :bananadance:
geishabird - January 29, 2007 02:03 AM (GMT)
I caved for the first time this year...I bought 4 books today, from my favourite publisher's overstock bookstore. Two were books I'd been eyeing for a while, one was a David Sedaris book I'd heard a lot about, and one was impulse. $25 for all; not too bad I guess. But I hope this hasn't opened the floodgates... :bash:
PepperVL - January 29, 2007 03:33 AM (GMT)
Well, when I met Sand and CTGMOM for lunch today, we went to a used bookstore afterwards. I bought 1 book for my PC - one that I'd already read so it did not add to Mount TBR (though the three books Sand gave me did!). Sand, however... *laughs*
And they'd both gone to the bookstore last night and before I met them too!

I just said you were in bookstores. Everyone will assume what they will.
And they'd be right...
