Title: Should I continue reading them?
Description: Christine Feehan's Dark series
CheriePie - November 26, 2007 06:17 AM (GMT)
I've had these on Mt. TBR for awhile now. And I've had taniazed's bookring copy of book 5,
Dark Challenge, in my possession since January. (Kyri was the only person left after me and taniazed had gone missing on BC for a couple years, but is back now.)
In any case, before starting on my ring copy of book 5, I need to get my copy of
Dark Magic (book 4) read first. So I was gonna try to squish it into my queue today, in between all the other stuff I owe. And I find myself thinking... is it worth it?? I didn't really care for the previous books in this series, finding them too sappy romance-y for my taste. But I'd told myself...
"let me read the first 5 and wait to make a decision about whether to continue with the series after that"But since I'm still working on a backlog of owed stuff, I find myself thinking, should I just pass these along unread? I have over 600+ unread books here in my possession at last count, most of which I'm dying to read. Since I'm not the kind of person who's able to read 100+ books a year (I'm currently on #65), should I not waste my time on books 4 and 5 of these?
The easiest way to see my reviews on the first 3 books is by searching my blog. Here's a quick link:
http://cheriepie.blogspot.com/search?q=christine+feehanSo those of you who've read them, and who kind of know what I like and don't like in books, what do you think? Should I not waste my time, or do you think it's worth it to at least read up to #5 and make up my own mind? I'm interested to hear whatcha think... thanks!

I've not read them or heard of them, but I wouldn't bother. If something doesn't grab me by the 3rd book, I think I'd move on. Too many books. :)

I've not read them, but if you have read the first 3 and was not hooked to the point of rushing out and buying new ones as soon as they come out, then I'd say abandon it. I'm sure you have loads of other books to read and life is too short to keep reading something you don't enjoy that much just to complete a series. These days that could mean 20 or 30 books. I really wish authors would go back to writing stand alones

:o What. Three books and you are not keen?
Release them. I give books a chance for about 50 to 100 pages.
You gave it 3 books.
Instead of struggling to read release them and start reading books you'd really enjoy!!~!!

I agree with the others. If the first 3 didn't do it for you then don't read them. Especially since you know you don't like romancey books. :P Just tell yourself I do not have to read them because I've read the others in the series and I don't have to read everything in my TBR I can give up on some books. ;)

I can only ditto what everyone else has already said. If you've read three already, and know you don't really care for them, I wouldn't bother to go any further. It's one thing it there were only 4 in the series, but if there are a lot, what's the point if you don't like them?
PepperVL - November 26, 2007 04:46 PM (GMT)
I agree with everyone else. If you don't like them, or even are just ambivilant about them, why take the time to read them? There are WAY too many books out there that you'll really enjoy for you to take time on something that you're not enjoying.

I'm with Marlene. If I read 150 pages of a book and don't like it, I probably won't finish it. Too many books out there in the world! Gotta catch em all :D
My sister and mother LOVE the Dark series, but we're big into romance novels. My sister's pretty strict about what she reads. If the people don't fall in love, she generally doesn't bother (which is why she won't read the Dresden Files no matter how much I try to persuade her to). So I'd suggest you give it up since that doesn't seem to be your kind of book.

I couldn't get into the series myself. I already had about 4 of the series waiting on my bookshelf and once I tried the first one I released them all.

Thanks y'all! I think that's what I'll do then. I already switched over my current read so I'm not gonna read book 4 now.
I was happy to hear from others who read them as well, or tried to.... Because yeah, I'd always kept hearing how great they were, how Christine Feehan started the paranormal romance genre with this series, so I tended to think of them as sort of "required reading" for a paranormal junkie like myself.
But I hear ya... I'm giving them up! Thanks again for making me see the light!

I heard such good things too but she just wasn't my cup of tea. I was a bit annoyed with myself for getting so many of the books and then not liking them! :whip: me!

Good Girl. Don't you feel more happy now? a weight lift of of your shoulders?
Next time ask sooner girlie :whip:
3 books and they (and myself) say I am crazy?

I read the first one of this series and was ready to b**** slap the hero and the heroine about half way through. I have others that I've acquired (freebies), but I've not been inclined to read them. I think I'm hanging on to them for in case I'm desperate for a paranormal read and don't have anything else handy. :P (Like that's ever going to happen with 500+ books in the TBR.)
CdnBlueRose - November 27, 2007 07:30 PM (GMT)
Oh dear...... I have a lot of these on Mt. TBR but haven't read any yet - this isn't sounding good for liking the series though... maybe I should try one SOON so if I don't like it either I can get rid of the lot.....

 Probably Rosie! If you're not into the helpless, swooning heroine and the chest-thumping alpha male thing though... with a syrupy sweet happy ending, then yeah, you probably should dump them.
I often referred to them as romances (think Harlequin) in a vampire wrapper. And I've never liked reading romance for the sake of romance... without some element of danger or perversion to it! :whip:

Same here. I have most of the series collected but have as of yet not read any. Thinking maybe I should pull out #1 and try it.

That pretty well summed up the first one for me too.
--------------Spoiler---------
I always get irritated when an author keeps pushing a particular point. Okay so after the first 12 times of the hero pulling that "The men protect their women" speech...I've got it. Can we please move on with the story!? And I also didn't like the heroine acting all frail and helpless then turning into Buffy the Vampire Slayer the last 50 or so pages either.
Of course that's just my :2cents:. I know there are a lot of people who really like this series. It was the first of the series and later ones may be better. I do recall their being one character who intrigued me, but I can't for the life of me remember what his name was. Been too long since I've read it.

I'm thinking maybe Gregori... the most powerful one? You see, that's why I almost wanted to continue a bit. I'm at the point where Gregori is finally about to claim Mikhail and whats-her-names daughter as his own. And it's supposed to take place in New Orleans. That's book 4, Dark Magic, and the one that I left off at. But he was the one character that intrigued me.

I dropped the Dark series after reading about half of the first book. I didn't care for it much.
