Description: How do I get a back ground?

apolonia - November 19, 2007 05:26 PM (GMT)
I want a background from this site:

Backgrounds

Anyone know how do I do it?

cheesygiraffe - November 19, 2007 05:31 PM (GMT)
You want one personally for this site? Or do you mean for everyone? I know one for all can be added but that's more up Cherie's alley not mine.

apolonia - November 19, 2007 05:36 PM (GMT)
I want to use one from this site and ad it to my bookcrossing profile.

EllyMae58 - November 19, 2007 06:00 PM (GMT)
I can't remember the code offhand, but if you Google search for HTML background code or something to that effect, you should find tutorials that will tell you. That's all I do when I need the code to do something; I had background for a while.

apolonia - November 19, 2007 06:10 PM (GMT)
I tried that but I still couldn't figure it out. I am really dumb when it comes to that stuff. I looked under yahoo, I will try google this time.

CheriePie - November 20, 2007 01:46 AM (GMT)
Do you want to do it something like my bookshelf? Is that what you're looking to do?

Note that mine is very light and unobtrusive so I haven't had anyone at BC complain to me about not supposed to be doing that. But I've got a very light purple/gray behind the side menus and the profile part itself inside is an off-gray instead of bright white.

ETA - matter of fact, I just noticed that that's the exact site where I got my own background from... so perhaps it was me that gave you the idea? :)

It must be really light, 'cause I can't even SEE a background color or design of any kind!

I think the design is around the profile... and her actual profile is purple?

put it next to another profile and you should see the difference. Granted it'll appear even lighter on like a laptop or a brighter type of screen like that. It's subtle, but it's there. :)

ETA - also if you scroll down, past all the side menus, you'll notice the background easier.

I'm wondering if that's what Ap's trying to do... or something else.

Yup, pretty much... it's sorta a purple/gray, very subtle. :)

apolonia - November 20, 2007 02:46 AM (GMT)
I was looking for something like this:

BrynnSC

but with a different picture of course.

But based on Cherie's post I'm wondering if that's allowed?

CheriePie - November 20, 2007 04:09 AM (GMT)
Ahhh okay, so you want the background in the middle profile part there, and not for the page itself like I had it, which is why I asked. :)

Okay, standby... I'll post a code example for ya in a little bit.

ETA - Oh and what they didn't like to see, and some people got told to undo, was applying a style to the whole page which affected the site-wide links and the like.

apolonia - November 20, 2007 04:33 AM (GMT)
Thanks Cherie! I knew someone here woudl know how to help..

CheriePie - November 20, 2007 04:53 AM (GMT)
The way Brynn did it, and probably the method most people would be familiar with, is by enclosing the entire profile within TABLE tags as follows:

CODE

<table cellpadding=0 cellspacing=0 border=0 background="http://xs23.xs.to/pics/05141/heartsMoonsClovers.gif"><tr><td>

***all your profile stuff goes here***

</td></tr></table>

Don't forget the last 3 closing tags.

CheriePie - November 20, 2007 05:00 AM (GMT)
An alternate method, and the one I'd probably use myself, involves Cascading Style Sheets, aka styles or CSS.

This will apply the background to the entire white part, including where your picture is, and the white menu popout on the left side. At the very top of your profile block

CODE
<style type="text/css"> #content, .smi { background-image: url('http://static1.grsites.com/archive/textures/lgrey/lgrey089.gif'); background-repeat: repeat; } </style>

Alternately, to get the background only on the profile part below, like so:

CODE
<style type="text/css"> #profilebio { background-image: url('http://static1.grsites.com/archive/textures/lgrey/lgrey089.gif'); background-repeat: repeat; } </style>

apolonia - November 20, 2007 05:01 AM (GMT)
Ok then how do I turn this :ss044.jpg
into a gif?

apolonia - November 20, 2007 05:03 AM (GMT)
Or I saved it to my computer like this:

C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\My Documents\My Pictures\red clouds.jpg

It doesn't have to be a GIF, a JPG is fine.

And the file needs to be hosted up on the web somewhere. So is it up at grsites then? cuz you can link to it directly from there. otherwise you need to get some webspace or a photobucket account or someplace like that to upload it so you can link it from your profile.

CheriePie - November 20, 2007 05:10 AM (GMT)
Alternately, if you wanna point me to the URL of the background file on the web somewhere, I'll build the code for you and tell you where to insert it.

I personally like the style sheet method better, the 2nd one I posted as it's cleaner and things don't get screwed up if you lose the ending tags. So I'd tend to build it that way for you if you want me to make it specific.

apolonia - November 20, 2007 05:23 AM (GMT)
Red Clouds

this is it (I hope)

CheriePie - November 20, 2007 05:33 AM (GMT)
Here you go. Copy the below code to the very top of the Your Extended Information section:

CODE
<style type="text/css"> #profilebio { background-image: url('http://static1.grsites.com/archive/textures/ss/ss044.jpg'); background-repeat: repeat; } </style>

If you've already got a style section there, let me know as we'll have to integrate this into what you've already got instead of creating it all over again.

Obviously, you'll have to make sure all your text and links and all that can be seen over this dark background as well.

apolonia - November 20, 2007 05:37 AM (GMT)
Your the best Cherie!!! I love it!!

Most of the text colors look ok, I might have to brighten up a few, but that at least is something I can do on my own!!

CheriePie - November 20, 2007 07:10 AM (GMT)
FYI, so if you wanted to change the DEFAULT text color for this section, what color the text is if you don't specify any particular color, you could simply add it to the style tag so that the revised style tag would be like so:

CODE
<style type="text/css"> #profilebio { background-image: url('http://static1.grsites.com/archive/textures/ss/ss044.jpg'); background-repeat: repeat; color: #6600cc; } </style>

The part that's new is where it starts with the word color. As you can see, as I'm adding more stuff to the page style, I'm integrating it into the current style tag instead of adding a new one. You could change the color code to any other color you want (#6600cc is purple I like.)

I can see it at work. It's a lovely lavender with marble, although the layout is all overlapped and stuff.

Pretty! But the text is hard to read. :(

I should think about putting background on mine again. My profile is ready for an overhaul.

PepperVL - November 20, 2007 04:31 PM (GMT)
Hey, apolonia... having used backgrounds from that site before, I highly recommend you either use their free folder feature or save it to your harddrive and upload it elsewhere.

I've had problems with hotlinking like that in the past.

TITurtle1 - November 20, 2007 05:40 PM (GMT)
Very nice Ap! I like it. :D

I really love your profile page, Cherie. The marble-ish page background is beautiful and your color scheme works great! I need to change my bookshelf profile one of these days. I'm getting tired of so many tables. :P

zzz - May 5, 2008 08:18 AM (GMT)
OK I've changed colours on my profile (now I'm in problem because when I figure out how to do I've changed zillion times and can't decide which one is the best  :P ): My Shelf

Now I should see how to put text into the "boxes", etc

zzz - May 5, 2008 03:39 PM (GMT)
How to create an i-frame (the same as Cliff's Wish List) with hyper links for bookring-books? I'd like to put this one the right side, next to the Cliff's WL i-frame and would like to be transparent just like Cliff's.

AM I asking too much? I really tried to figure out alone but I couldn't put it in the same line (it's either above or under Cliff's frame) then books weren't clickable and the background was gray and not transparent.

I like the new design... could I ask you what code you used to get the cloud background? I have an image I think I may like to use... :peek:
