Title: Audiobook Box participants. Input needed
Description: vote on what to do
Danesnboxers - November 13, 2007 12:07 AM (GMT)
It seems that we are passing around the same books a lot or not enough different types and the box is getting kind of stale. Granted it might be because I started it with a bunch of mysteries and that's most of all I have.
I wanted to see what everyone else thought. Please, please give me your input.
shaunesay - November 13, 2007 12:15 AM (GMT)
I'm not sure how to vote, my problem is more that the CD selection is usually pretty limited and that's all I listen to because that's all I have in my car. I've tried doing cassettes and I just end up not listening to them because I'm never in the same placeat home long enough to ever get through them.
I'm fine either way, I guess, just wish there were more CD's to choose from. I can always pass if there's nothing that catches my eye.
KathyB - November 13, 2007 02:53 AM (GMT)
I don't really like to listen to abridged very often and it seems that there are only a few unabridged that are put in and they are usually snapped up pretty quickly. I'm not saying all abridgements are bad and I've put in several myself, but for the most part, I prefer unabridged. I can listen to cassette or CD cause I have both in my car.
But I'm willing to skip months when there is nothing I want or I'm willing to put a couple of new books in if you want to start over. Either is fine with me.
Kyrissaean - November 13, 2007 06:08 AM (GMT)
Danes? You mean you like all that sick shit? REALLY?!!
I'm open to whatever. We can wait, we can keep going as usual and see what happens, we can all plop some more books into the mix.... Do people need more time to catch up on their listening and/or hit libraries sales? I've got the unfair advantage of being a relative newbie to this box so I'm not really up on what's old or what's new!
I knew when I joined the box that there tended to be mostly mysteries, non-genre fiction, and non-fiction floating around in here. Actually, that's one of the reasons I was a late joiner -- I was a little worried that if those were the popular types of audios then my offerings wouldn't be of interest since I usually read well, everything else! So I waited until I had enough audios backlogged to replace for enough rounds to cover me until I'd listened to the one I took out, just in case!
Unabridged is more my thing too, but those can be so $$$ if you aren't downloading them....

I've noticed in the relays people are listing several books and suggesting "pick one." Maybe we could do something similar? I know I have at least 10
audiobooks on my shelf but only put 2 in the box.
My kids bought me a gadget to plug in the lighter in the car that broadcasts my portable cassette player over the
radio. It's a bit more labor intensive than the old cassette/Cd combo in my old car,
but allows me to listen to either format.

I voted to continue at least for a round or two. I think the fact that we are having this discussion may help solve the problem. Now that everyone is more aware of the fact that putting the same books back in the box has become a problem they will try to put in new ones when they do a replace. 20 books were taken from the box in October, so I think that is still significant activity in the box. I have noticed all the boxes seem to have more people skipping. I think there are several reasons besides the selection why people are skipping more.
1. Everyone's TBR/TBL pile is now so large they are thinking twice about adding to it.
2. The higher US postage rate are making US people a little more selective in what they take from the boxes. They know that they may have to spend $5 or more to send out their books.
3. There are so many boxes.
msjoanna - November 13, 2007 03:37 PM (GMT)
As a relative newcomer to this box, I don't really know what's old or new.
But I do have certain limitations as to what I like. As others have said, I mostly listen to unabridged books. That's mostly what I put in and mostly what I take out. I also only listen to audios in my car, which has both cassette and CDs, but which won't play most downloaded CDs.
I also like that people sometimes put back something they took out because things seem to get pulled before I get a chance to get to them. So I'm glad when they come back around again...
But I think it's a pretty busy time of year in general -- I know I'm a little behind on Owed TBRs and I have two exchanges coming up that I'm trying to read things for. (Though, actually, I'm all caught up on audios because I have such a small supply of them.)
Amberkatze - November 13, 2007 04:42 PM (GMT)
I was really excited about joining this box and picked something out in the first round that I played in (which I still haven't recieved). Then the next 3 rounds there was nothing for me. The problem was really that I can only play CDs and the only things I would have considered taking out were on cassette :(
I would love to join the box again...but I just didn't find enough to interest me which was sad
lizziwhizz - November 13, 2007 08:41 PM (GMT)
I suggested starting again with two donations, only because I feel like Danes has born the brunt of the owing because she donated so many books to begin with. It's not a fair burden for her to be replacing lots of books when she donated so many to begin with. Beginning anew with two from each person is plenty to keep the box going.
That said, it might be nice to wait until the new year, to give everyone time to catch up on TBRs, save up some funds for mailing, and maybe get new audiobooks for the holidays!
But I have no problem just replacing and skipping if we decide to keep going!
AceofHearts - November 13, 2007 11:44 PM (GMT)
I would not mind putting in some extra audios into the box but if they were not taken I do not want to be responsible for replacing them.
I don't know whether I am explaining it well enough. I have lots of audios I would love to give away and am willing to mail a few extras but not willing to come up with new audios for replacement if they are not liked.
The idea of starting over with 2 audios each is also okay but I prefer just continuing

makes sense to me Ace, I knew what you meant! ;)

I really don't think the box has a bad selection, the only thing as others have pointed out is that many cars play CDs only, which very much limit our choice. I would really, really like to see more CDs, though that would mean people have to take out cassettes and put in CDs, a regression in technology that is less likely than the other way around.
Personally I join some of the physical bookboxes over on BC forum, and like to do some cross pollination. Does anybody do something similar? I haven't been around long enough to know if the same books pop up again and again, though I know that sometimes in swaps or vbb, if someone else gets a book I am interested in, I sure hope to see it resurface! And considering we have newcomers all the time I won't think that's a problem.
But, I am fine with whatever decision you oldtimers think is the best!
Breeze - November 14, 2007 12:15 AM (GMT)
I like passing around the same books! I always hope to get shot at a good title later if someone grabs it before my turn!

Keep the input coming. This is great so that we can decide what to do.
alsgal - November 14, 2007 03:58 PM (GMT)
I'm fine with whatever everyone decides.
I do make an effort to listen to my unabridged and/or CD books first to put in the box cause I know some people like only unabridged or only CD.
appaloosatb - November 23, 2007 03:35 AM (GMT)
What about splitting the box into two boxes, one for CDs and one for cassettes? It sounds like one of the biggest problems is that people can only do one or the other. I know I never take out CDs because I only have a cassette player in my car. Just a thought.
bartonz - November 23, 2007 04:55 PM (GMT)
My 2 cents - I can only do CDs, (though I CAN digitize cassettes, It is work, but it'll do in a pinch) and I don't like abridged. Despite that, I've gotten interesting books each time, though it feels like my selectin is way narrower than what's in the box. I need to get some of the ones I've chosen back into circulation.

What has been decided? We did an audiobox in Oct and haven't since

It would probably be appreciated, Ace. In the past I've been second in command but lately I've been so busy with teaching and taking care of my new house that it's been hard to keep up. I'm still updating the Books out of Play and will continue to do so, though. With Danes's move, she might appreciate the extra set of hands with the box. But you're right, I guess we have to acknowledge a decision! :)
shaunesay - December 22, 2007 06:01 PM (GMT)
it looks like the vote was pretty clear!
But since it's been so long, we might want to confirm what is still in the box with people?

If needed I can help out too when I have free time. I'm starting to run out of things to listen to! :(
