Title: Avatars?

AlterEgoZoe - October 27, 2007 11:05 PM (GMT)
I'm trying to upload a new avatar, and I removed the one I had been using, but every time I try to upload a new one I get this error message:

"The error returned was:

The file you requested to upload was greater than the limit the administrator has set for your group. "

The one I'm trying upload is 100x100, and a .jpg. Any help?

150x150 is the max so that should work.

Check the size of the file too as there's a limit on that, though I forget off the top of my head what that is atm. Though I can tell you that if it's over 100K, that'll definitely be too big.

ETA - Actually, it looks like 200K is the limit:
Pictures (.gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .png) must be smaller than 200kb and 75kb for any other type of allowed file, unless you've purchased Extra File Space.

I have a stupid question. What is the difference between the picture itself being a certain size and the file being a certain size? Meaning, you said Cherie to check the size also of the file.
When I want to use a pic I roll over the pic and it will tell me what type pic it is (jpg, gif) also the size. Is that what you are talking about?

The picture size refers to how wide and tall the picture is. Think of that like the 4 x 6 or 5 x 7 pictures you get when you print photos.

File size refers to how many megabytes the file is. A higher-resolution picture will have a larger file size even if the picture is the same size. The type of file it is will also affect the file size. Certain types of files use more data to store the picture, so the file size is bigger. That's like if you have something you're typing... a 5 page document will have a smaller file size than a 50 page document, because there's less data to store.

And I've got more definitive numbers now too, that refer specifically to Avatars:

Your avatar must be no bigger than 150 pixels by 150 pixels in size. (Though if it's bigger, it'll be automatically resized down by the server so there's not much worry there.)

Avatars uploaded from your computer must be no larger than 25 KB. (I guess they brought this down from the 75 KB limit I had made note of earlier.)

The following file types are allowed: .gif .jpeg .jpg .png .bmp

And thanks for clarifying for Sci on the other question Pepper. :)
