What???!! No offense at all to anyone out there, but that just doesn't sit well with me. Honestly, that thought never crossed my mind....
AceofHearts - October 20, 2007 07:00 PM (GMT)
Never thought about his sexuality
candieb - October 20, 2007 07:15 PM (GMT)
I saw this on my news feed this morning. I dunno, I had kind of a fleeting thought of it in book 4 or 5, but figured I was being silly.
I like the E! one
http://www.eonline.com/news/article/index....=rss_topstoriesEsp this part:
"(What you just heard was the sound of conservative religious groups scribbling down one more reason to loathe the Harry Potter franchise.)"
I dunno why, but it cracked me up.

Why tell us now? It's not either here or there? It's not like she's going to write more in the series and he's dead.

From what I've read, she was answering one of the questions she was posed, about Dumbledore's romantic life. Hence her coming forward to tell she always saw him as gay and that he was in love with Grindelwald, which, in itself, is kind of a romantic tragedy since they had to become enemies.
caligula03 - October 20, 2007 09:28 PM (GMT)
Back before I gave up on the series I had him pegged as gay only because he reminded me of a gay coworker of about the same age.

I just ran into the same article before popping in here!
Yeah, since she's still supervising the last two movies it kinda makes sense that a few more details might come out that hadn't been mentioned yet -- just so they don't inadvertantly change something. Sounds like that's what brought it to the front of her mind, anyway:
Rowling told the audience that while working on the planned sixth Potter film, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," she spotted a reference in the script to a girl who once was of interest to Dumbledore. A note was duly passed to director David Yates, revealing the truth about her character.

...I never pegged Dumblydork as anything other then asexual. He just didn't seem like the sort to be worried about romantic foibles of life.
but I guess everyone is young once...
Lexie
and ps: just because a girl was 'of interest' to Dumblydork it doesn't make him any less gay. I've had gay friends and coworkers who freely admit that at one time or another they've found a woman interesting. Not enough to trade teams, but enough so that they became friends (in fact one of my best friends Bart originally became my friend because he found me interesting, we met through his then current boyfriend--who was in my cousin's cooking class--Jacob. He said that he didn't find me romantically interesting, just a very interesting girl who he thought was attractive and wanted to get to know.). Hell I've had hetero male friends (when in their cups mostly XD ) who tell me that they've found some guys attractive--that doesn't make them GAY.
GAH i remembered why I hate JKR again.

I don't see that it makes a difference to the story one way or the other and I usually consider people's sexual orientation none of my business!!
candieb - October 21, 2007 12:14 AM (GMT)
Okay, putting on my marketing hat here - remember I own a business, but more than that my husband is a marketing dork. She's giving speeches, she's writing a HP "encyclopedia" and she's writing a new series. Duh! She wants to keep the world talking about HP and, more importantly, about her. Yes, I'm sure she loves the books and what she does, but there's still a paycheck and the business side of writing to consider.
I'm sure you won't agree, but that's my 2 cents as to the disclosure ;)

My first reaction was...
What? He can't find "true love" just because he's gay? I didn't like the answer to the question that was asked. His "gayness" doesn't have anything to do with finding "true love."
Argghhhhhhhhhh! Yep, I'm still annoyed!

I agree with Candie and Nou, although I don't personally care that much :D

I agree, it seemed more of an attention getter than anything else. Really doesn't make a difference to me one way or the other. I do like the HP books, but so far I've not cared for JKR herself in any of the interviews I've seen, which granted, might be 2. It just always makes me wonder, how did such a fun story come out of YOUR brain lady?

If Dumbledore is modeled after anyone knows from the baby boom generation or older it makes sense that he didn't get to find true love. The "free love" era wasn't exactly a happy time for gays of that generation. I highly recommend The Velvet Rage.

Desperate attention grab was my first thought when I heard about this....

Generally speaking, I think that's true... but it still wouldn't be impossible for him to find True Love. One of my grandmother's cousins is gay. He was born about 1930, and he's been living happily with his partner for several decades.. pretty much since he was the normal marrying age... they're not married though, and seem to have no interest in being married now that they could be.

That was my first reaction, too! Although, I can't remember when, but at some point I remembering suspecting he might be.

Personally, I don't think it has any bearing on the stories.
