Title: Reading Slump
Description: How to recover?
Mirp - September 27, 2007 05:59 AM (GMT)
I've been in a total reading slump....well a slump in general. While I'm feeling a lot better and becoming more active I just can't seem to get back into reading. It's really frustrating....any suggestions?
Morsecode, I'll be sending you on that book, the practiced mind, this week. Sorry I've held on to it for so long and I still haven't read it!
zzz, same to you I'll send you on the swimmingpool library this week. I'm about 100 pages away from the end but I just can't seem to finish it. You'll have to tell me how it ends.

When I'm in a slump I usually try to read something light and easy. I go back to one of my favorite authors. Reading slumps suck.

I tend to read something that it out of the normal for me. That tends to help. Either that or try magazines.

i have books that i save because i think i'll really enjoy them. When i find myself in a slump I pull out one of those books and that usually helps.

I do the same thing as meshe after i've been a reading slump for a while- i try the "light/fluffy" ones. i try not to stress about it and think i'll get back into the hang of it when i'm ready.

I have the same problem sometimes and I hate it when I get those slumps.
OMG you and me we both are in the same situation it seems. I also owe Morsie and zzz books and they have been waiting for ages.
Most of the time my reading slump stops because A: I just buy myself a great book or b: I keep on trying books until I get one that really makes me keep reading.
(So I've read a lot of books only half this year)
good luck

I agree it does suck.
I usually try to read something that am meaning to read but never get to. And usually this helps.

Oh mirp I already told you that you don't have to hurry at all!
Please don't send the book; no one is waiting for it so take your time. And especially since you "survived" first part of the book (so dark and with so graphic scenes)! Ok this is very subjective mark. I've read book two years ago and I remember that second part is giving the point for all those things in the first part of the book but I will not be able to told you much further. I wrote in my JE impresions but since I'm always avoiding spoilers I don't think it will help you much.
SO do not send me the book until you finish with reading. If you still wish to finish that is :)
ETA:
I replied on you PM before I saw this thread.

(((mirp))) It sounds like you and I are in the same boat. I've been in a slump generally and a reading slump in particular for quite a while... I've had spurts in the last year where I seem to be getting better and reading a bunch, but then it slides off again quickly. I haven't found the cure-all yet, but here's one thing I found surprisingly helpful a couple of times:
Pick up a book off Mt. TBR that you've been gonna try but aren't really crazy about. With those, I find one of two things happen: I pick it up, try a few chapters, and find that nah it really isn't my thing. Then I can shrug and say, well, I tried it and satisfied my curiosity, but as expected, not really my cup of tea, so I can clear it out of the house with a clear conscience. On the other hand, sometimes by reading something that I've given myself permission to quit reading the second I'm not enjoying it, the pressure to finish is off and I actually end up getting sucked in and enjoying it. And either way, a book ends up off Mt. TBR, which is a good thing. :)

Yep, yep. That is what I do. I either end up getting absorbed in something I was iffy about, or I end up clearing a lot of filler out of my TBR.

When I'm stuck, I usually read fluff (so I don't have to think much) or something that's short and quick (under 200 pages).

My cure for a reading slump: Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books!
Good luck - I hate reading slumps.

That sounds like a good idea.
I did that once and I was lucky. There was a book on my shelf for a long time and it turned out to be a great read. :)
