Sorry to skip this round. I see some books I would like, but I owe too many TBRs from this box, let alone in general.

I'll PM rebecca.

rebeccaljames - September 20, 2007 03:53 AM (GMT)
Please, drop me to the bottom. I am really busy right now with school starting tomorrow and getting everything ready. I will not be able to make it within my 24 hour peroid, so I thank it is only fair to go ahead and bump me to the bottom. I don't want to hold things up knowing I will not make it on time. Thank you!

2. If two days is a problem for you (i.e. you can't get online during the weekends, or will be on a trip, etc.) please let me know so that I can put a note by your name and allow you extra time.

Hi Lexie, Should I load it up with Georgette?

 what in the world gave you that idea? XD

Lexie

shaunesay - September 20, 2007 11:33 PM (GMT)
So tell me about Georgette Heyer, I haven't read any yet, but you seem very fond of her, what is it that gets you? Enquiring future readers want to know!

lexilewords - September 21, 2007 12:06 AM (GMT)
:) well I'm very fond of her because she tends to have romances in time periods that I really enjoy. Georgian and Regency being those time periods XD

She was actually the first romance novelist I ever read. My grandmother, when I was ten years old, lent me a very old copy of 'The Masqueraders' which she had purchased when she was just a little older then myself (the book came out in 1928 and my grandmother was born in 1929...). I read it, loved it and then sought to find other books by Heyer.

Unfortunately at that time in my life mentioning the words 'romance' and 'book' in the same sentence to my folks didn't end well so I pretty much put it out of my mind.

Until I was about I think 16 or 17, when my grandmother allowed me to look through her attic for a book of my dad's. Then I refound the book, re-read in the space of an afternoon, fell BACK in love with it (since at this point I was devouring romance novels of ANY time period) and then demanded my dad find me more.

But the books didn't go into reprint, at least not to my knowledge (and I wasn't as computer savvy then as I am now), until a few years ago (and by reprint I mean that I can go to a bookstore and be like 'georgette heyer please' and they don't go 'what are you talking about?') so I haven't been able to really pick up copies of the books.

I do own a copy of 'The Masqueraders' from the 70's I believe, but its so battered I'm not happy reading it. I've read her first book 'The Black Moth' (thanks to a friend who found the complete text online for me) and I picked up Colition at some point, but it must have been before my move to my dad's so its still packed away somewhere (And I'm going on 5 years here...but so many boxes of books) at my uncle's.

I think the reason I mainly like her (aside from sentimental reasonings) is because she writes in a very out-dated way. Not just out-dated as in the time period, but you can tell that she grew up in a time where quality of speech was very important. The tone of her books can be a bit formal, but I think that her writing is far better then many of today's authors.

Also she was basically the mother of 'regency' romances. She did extensive research and alot of what are in her books were not common known things, but things that she found in old letters, journals and the like. She was also the first to use the phrase 'to make a cake of oneself' which I simply adore saying XD

This website will help a bit more if you are very interested.

I love "putting on airs to be interesting". It's so evocative.

The Heyer historical romances are extremely well-written. I wouldn't touch any type of romance until I read Bath Tangle back in 1988. I was house-sitting for my sister at Easter & thought I'd give one a try. I proceeded to spend the rest of the 4 days reading Georgette Heyer books, breaking only for a few hours sleep. I didn't do anything else the whole time. Once I got through my sister's selection of about 6 or 7 Heyer's I moved on to my mother's complete collection.

I now have the lot, & her murder mysteries, nearly all in hardback. All except for Duplicate Death which my mum borrowed & has now disappeared. I must get another copy some time.

Once you've read Heyer you see her plots & characters appear in many of todays regency novels - slightly changed. A few awful regencies I've read seem like they've been written by someone who read a Heyer once. A lot of them are OK but none as good as Georgette who did copious research & created her own worlds. A lot of authors fail by trying to impose current morals & mores on early 19th century events.

QUOTE (catsalive @ Sep 21 2007, 12:58 AM)
Once you've read Heyer you see her plots & characters appear in many of todays regency novels - slightly changed. A few awful regencies I've read seem like they've been written by someone who read a Heyer once. A lot of them are OK but none as good as Georgette who did copious research & created her own worlds. A lot of authors fail by trying to impose current morals & mores on early 19th century events.

this I completely agree with. I have read some very good regency authors, but by in large they all seem to fall into the 'meh' pile. I admit to being a big fan of Julia Quinn's Bridgerton Series (in general, I like 'Romancing Mr. Bridgerton' the best 'cause I loved Penelope so much) and I like Sandra Heath alot. But it always makes me cringe when I read a line along the lines of 'She was daring, she was bold, she was determined to set her own destiny' and she's the daughter of an Earl, immense fortune and so stunningly beautiful the sun is blinded (oh and let's not forget she's well-read, excellent manners, impectable tastes in fashion, has an eye for horses, musically gifted and lest we forget she's very big on charitable donations).

I would think such an Incomparable wouldn't have need of a husband since the very air she breaths becomes the latest fashion and men fawn for her like bees to honey. ::rolls eyes::

At least Heyer's females were never THAT over endowed with virtues!

That is a highly comedic one, a great Georgian romp, the Talisman Ring. I loved Ludo.

I haven't read Heyer but I don't know anyone who's read her that hasn't loved her. As further evidenced by Cats and Lexie's ravings!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Historical Fiction Virtual Book Box ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ROUND 8 ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

TURN TIME LIMIT RULES
1. Turn time is 2 full days, 48 hours from the time the update listing the player's turn is posted.

2. If two days is a problem for you (i.e. you can't get online during the weekends, or will be on a trip, etc.) please let me know so that I can put a note by your name and allow you extra time.

3. If the full 48 hours has passed with no word from the player, the next player will go, and the missing player will be moved down 1 space. We will do this 3 times, but without the 2 day time limit each time. A Player skipped in this way will only have the time it takes for the next three people to take their turns to check in before being dropped to the bottom of the list (this is all if we have not heard from the player). It will look like this: 2 days, skip, skip, skip, bottom. If a player is skipped in this way and/or placed at the bottom, that spot will become their new permanent spot until the list is reshuffled.

4. The Box Organizer will be the time keeper and determine a skip or bottom placement.

5. This bookbox will make its rounds EVERY OTHER MONTH and books may be left in for THREE rounds.

3. If you decide to skip, you have the option to ask to be placed at the bottom of the list for another try. If you do this, that will become your new permanent spot until the list is reshuffled. (reshuffling will happen after every 3rd round)
