Out of those I have read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, A Thousand Acres, and A Map of the World... I liked Hitchhiker's, but really didn't like the other two..

Welcome CinnyCat :)
I haven't read any of them - but I voted for The Small Rain

I voted for Hitchhiker's Guide because I adored that series. If you haven't read it yet, I think you should start immediately.

I voted for A Map of the World - it was really good!
Hitchhiker is good too but to me, you've got to be in the right mood for that one!
cinnycat - September 17, 2007 05:58 PM (GMT)
Wow, 50% so far like Hitchhiker. To me it seems like that would make a nice winter read. I'm not sure yet though!! And thanks for the welcome sunlightbub! :D

I started reading The Small Rain today (the runner up so far) but I'm still up for seeing more votes since there will obviously be a choice after this one! I think another reason I picked The Small Rain was because Madeleine L'Engle passed away recently. It's kind of a tribute to one of my favorite writers as a child!

I voted, like most of us here, for The Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy. I really liked it.
cinnycat - September 24, 2007 04:19 AM (GMT)
whoa, I'd say Hitchhikers is definitely in the lead. Did anyone read and NOT like any of the books I listed?
KathyB - September 25, 2007 11:53 AM (GMT)
uh - I didn't like Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but everyone else seems to like it so you might too.

I did not like Oryx and Crake.
I know, I'm weird... like the only Fantasy fan in the world who doesn't like Atwood, but I don't.

Do you know why you don't like Atwood? I'm curious!

Oh, and right now I'm reading East Is East by T.C. Boyle even though noone voted for it! Boyle is one of my favorite writers, and I needed to read something from him! If you don't know him, go read The Tortilla Curtain RIGHT NOW!! haha. I swear it will be a classic. It is such a great commentary on the present day immigration policy.

Well, to be fair, the only book of hers I've read is Oryx and Crake. It's been a long time since I read it, and I got it from the library and didn't review it for my LJ, so mostly the impression I have of it is that I didn't enjoy it and didn't enjoy it enough that I have no desire at all to read any of Atwood's other stuff.
I guess part of it was that it was more science fiction than fantasy... and speculative science fiction at that. I read to be entertained, not preached to. You'll be hard pressed to find a post-apocalyptic novel that I enjoy. (I can recall one that I didn't hate, and even then I only liked it, not loved it.)
As I recall, the novel jumps around a lot, with lots of flashbacks detailing how things got to where they are, but there didn't seem to be any point to where they were. Nothing really happened in the here and now. I like plot. If a book doesn't have plot and action, I don't like it. (I would rather physically harm myself than read The Old Man and the Sea again... because he floats for 92 pages!!!!!)
I admit, that perhaps Oryx and Crake was just the wrong Atwood book for me to read. But there wasn't anything in the writing that made me want to look beyond the plot (or lack thereof) and post-apocalyptic cautionary warnings to see how I might enjoy other things she's written.

oh, well I really love post-apocalyptic novels, but that's just me. haha.
