Title: Wicked by Gregory Maguire
Description: Book vs. Musical

I just saw Wicked this weekend and LOVED it. Who else has seen it? I'm interested to see what others thought and if you liked the deviations from the book. I'm usually a fan of the book over the movie, but in this case I liked the story lines changes of the musical better.
The first half of the musical followed the book perfectly, but the second half changed things up a bit. I actually thought the changes were great...especially the ending with the happy couple! I liked the scarecrow and tin man coming from characters already in the story. I just loved the whole thing.
Anyone else?

Well, I have tickets to see it a second time in January, so...
I like the play better. It's not as dark and creepy as the book. And there are soooo many things that they slip by you... I can't wait to see what I notice more the second time.
For example, the costumes. I love how they gradually change the costumes and each costume change has a completely valid reason and makes complete sense in the context of the play... and it's really subtle... and then all of a sudden you realize that instead of looking at two school girls, you're looking at the Good Witch of the North and the Wicked Witch of the West...

I loved the book and I would love to see the play. ;)

I mostly liked the book, and I really loved the musical. Although it definitely changes the ending, I think it works much better than the book's ending would have.
I'd see the musical again without question; I wouldn't read the book again (and I do like to reread books that I've really loved so I didn't love the book).

I'm a Baumist so you wouldn't want to know my opinion of Wicked or Gregory Macguire!!!

I enjoyed them both but I wanted the play to stick more to the book. Halfway through I realized I had to stop saying in my head "That's not how it was in the book" or else I would ruin it for myself. I'd like to see the play again though and I likely wouldn't read the book again (but unlike Karen, I generally don't reread books).

I loved the play far better than the book

Wicked is coming to Charlotte, NC the weekend before my sister gets married and during the weekend she gets married. I just called her about it and she was like, so what do you really do the weekend before you get married anyway????
See we usually for each other's birthday we take each other to a Broadway show. Well this year's line up in Greenville, SC kind of sucks, so I was looking to see what Charlotte had (which is a 1 hr 15 min drive). Bummer that they have it only for April.......

I'm a little confused by your post. Are you bummed b/c you aren't going to see it? If your sister doesn't mind going the weekend before her wedding you should go! You'll love it!

I saw the play before I ever read the book. I saw the original Broadway production at the Gershwin in NYC -- One and ONLY time I have ever been to NYC and the only BWS I've ever seen. The actors were amazing. The set was amazing. I loved everything about it!
I did like the play so much more than the book, but I'm not a big Maguire fan. I've listened to Son of a Witch and read a couple of other of his books, but uh, nope they just don't do it for me.

I'm going to see the Musical on November 3rd for my birthday (which is the 4th)!
So I'll update with my thoughts after I've seen it. I did want to read the book first though so I read that while I was in the Bay area, CA a few weeks ago.
