Title: Everybook VBB: Shuffling Frequency

chambejd - September 1, 2007 03:54 AM (GMT)
We currently shuffle the randomized list every month. I have seen discussion regarding this in other threads and some have indicated that they would like to shuffle less often because you could be taking your turn only a few turns after your last one and the selected hasn't changed all that much. I just thought I would see if people are happy with the frequency of randomizing or if people want to decrease the frequency.

This poll will be open for the month of September and if a change is requested by the majority, it will be implemented in October after another randomized list is generated (so no voting based on your Sept. location! )

Any feedback/discussion is welcome!

one way around this problem is to randomize the list in two parts (this is what I'll be doing for the Australian VBB I've just started)

please excuse the long post this will take to illustrate.

all randomizing done using the List Randomizer at RANDOM.ORG

----------------------------------

lets say we have 30 participants. here's how they look at the end of the latest round:

01. one
02. two
03. three
04. four
05. five
06. six
07. seven
08. eight
09. nine
10. ten
11. eleven
12. twelve
13. mr_lucky
14. fourteen
15. fifteen
16. sixteen
17. seventeen
18. eighteen
19. nineteen
20. twenty
21. twenty-one
22. twenty-two
23. twenty-three
24. twenty-four
25. twenty-five
26. twenty-six
27. twenty-seven
28. twenty-eight
29. phil
30. thirty
----------------------------------------------------
we want to randomize this list of names, but we don't want anyone from the end of the current list to appear at the beginning of the next list, so we randomize the top two-thirds of the list only:

01. twelve
02. two
03. six
04. sixteen
05. fourteen
06. five
07. eleven
08. seventeen
09. ten
10. nineteen
11. twenty
12. three
13. mr_lucky
14. seven
15. eighteen
16. nine
17. eight
18. fifteen
19. four
20. one

21. twenty-one
22. twenty-two
23. twenty-three
24. twenty-four
25. twenty-five
26. twenty-six
27. twenty-seven
28. twenty-eight
29. phil
30. thirty
--------------------------------------------------------------
now we randomize the bottom two-thirds of this updated list:

01. twelve
02. two
03. six
04. sixteen
05. fourteen
06. five
07. eleven
08. seventeen
09. ten
10. nineteen

11. phil
12. eighteen
13. twenty-three
14. eight
15. one
16. four
17. twenty-six
18. three
19. twenty-eight
20. twenty-seven
21. thirty
22. twenty-one
23. twenty-five
24. fifteen
25. nine
26. mr_lucky
27. twenty-four
28. twenty-two
29. twenty
30. seven
----------------------------------------------
and this results in a randomly-ordered list of participants in which nobody from the end of the just-completed round will appear too early in the next round :D

this took a while to type out, but in practice it only takes a couple of seconds to do.

Gosh. I never manage to get that technical with the Mystery VBB

chambejd - September 25, 2007 07:13 PM (GMT)
As 16 people prefer that we shuffle every two or more rounds and 12 people prefer that we will shuffle every round, the Everybook VBB will now be shuffling the list of participants once every two rounds. I will randomize a new list for the October round and every other month from there out.

This change will be updated in the box rules.

Thanks to everyone who voted!
