Title: What shall I read next?
bigcurlyloz - August 23, 2007 08:25 PM (GMT)
I've been doing a lot of "lighter" recently on my commute to work but am feeling the need for something a bit more heavyweight/requiring more concentration.
Help me choose!
Thank you :D

I LOVED Jane Eyre. I haven't read it since I was a teen though.

I've only read 3 of these books but The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy would be my pick of those I know. I enjoyed it very much.

I voted Jane Eyre too, I remember I was reading it for English class in high school, but was so sick during the time I was supposed to be doing the report that my mom rented the movie for me to help out! LOL! I did like it though, I really did read the book too! ;)

 Hi Lauren ~
I voted for Jane Eyre as I'm not familiar with any of the other authors.
I read Jane Eyre a couple years ago, after reading The Eyre Affair, the first (I think) of Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next, literary detective series books. He had so many clever references to the book. I enjoyed Jane Eyre, but it took me almost twice as long to read it vs. other books because of the old English language of that period.
Plus, I had a heck of a time getting my hands on the library's copy. Took me MONTHS. Sure helped when I found out the author is Charlotte Bronte, NOT Jane Austen!!! :bash:
Let us know which you choose and how you like it!

I voted for The Awakening. It is one of my all time favorite books! It isn't all that heavy though...

I've read Jane Eyre, but I hated it. I actually hated everything written by any of the Bronte sisters. I thought the books were basically boring.
(ducking now as all the Wuthering Heights lovers throw tomatoes)
I voted for One Hundred Years of Solitude, which I really liked and felt was a book that I wanted to read with real concentration.
I've never read American Psycho, though I read Ellis' more recent Lunar Park and liked it okay. I hear American Psycho is better.
I started to read The Awakening recently, but I was discouraged by my husband who told me it was one of the most boring books he ever had to read in school. Perhaps it appeals more to women?
I liked The God of Small Things fine, but not as much as the rave reviews had led me to expect.

I've read all those except
American Psycho and think they're all great - hard to choose! Very different books.
The God Of Small Things I found particularly moving, though.

I'm not big into the classics but I always liked Jane Eyre.

Wow, good ol' Jane is winning by a landslide. Which is only deserving as it's a wonderful book.

I love Jane Eyre, but Wuthering Heights  I really want to like it, because I love Heathcliff, but Cathy really winds me up. There's a girl who needs a :bash: :giggle:

I hated the Awakening. We had to read it for 12th grade English and while I only read the Cliff's Notes, I hated those as well. I haven't read the others cause I try my hardest never to read 'literature' if I can help it

Thank you to everyone who voted and posted - looks like it'll be Jane Eyre next! I'm looking forward to it - I read Wuthering Heights at the beginning of the year and really enjoyed it and I think this one is more universally liked, so should be good too.
I will be reading the other options sometime in the next few months (assuming my Masters doesn't curtail my reading entirely) and I'm glad they all got at least one vote!
:D

I have not read any of those but have them all on my bookshelf and if I was to pick out it would be American Psycho.
