Title: You know you have too many books when...
Description: you can't find one of them

geishabird - August 4, 2007 04:26 AM (GMT)
Okay, I know I'm not going crazy. I know that once upon a time I owned this book. I can remember seeing it on my bookshelves not too long ago.

Well, it's gone now. I went to look something up in it yesterday and I can't find it anywhere. And my apartment is not that big. Not big enough to lose a book. Or so I thought.

Please someone tell me I'm not the only one to experience this...

Guilty as charged.

:ditto:
I have several like that. Stuff that was part of my PC. One in particular has been driving me crazy that I can't find it. :angry2:

My missing books have usually turned up - to my big surprise - in the clean laundry basket.

It's SO weird - over the years, after turning my house upside down, that's where I've found several books. And I NEVER remember putting them there!!

Sunlightbub - August 4, 2007 04:00 PM (GMT)
Happened to me a few times.
Not as often as I've ended up with more than one copy of the same book though

Happens to me all the time. I've learned not to offer a tbr book in a swap, VBB etc, until I physically find it. It is less stressful looking for the if I don't really need them.

Way too often this happens to me, especially with my "extras" that I post to Paperbackswap.com

Yes, that's the other side of the coin, I guess. :P

Um. No. Of course not. I, uh, always know where all my books are. :innocent:

Oh man!! I hear ya!! I have been spending 10 minutes every day for the past couple of weeks looking for Fever 1793 - I KNOW I have it, but it's not in the "Teen" section of my bookcases - and that leaves just WAY too many other places to look..... I have 4 bookcases completely alphabetized so I know it's not in them - but the rest..... I owe this one to someone from the Teen VBB - normally I go and locate the books I offer and put them in a particular bookcase, but I didn't with this one and I'm totally regretting that!!

well I can't find books occasionally (Though I find it fun to just reorganize all my bookshelves at 4am some random mornings..), but i'm actually to the point where I literally can't stuff more into my shelves.

I have five 3-shelf bookcases, and two 5-shelf bookcases. All are so packed that they are literally toppling over (I finally had to deadbolt them to each other and the walls...). This is with another 300+ ready to get rid of and send off to booktraders...

and recently, since I had just had two huge booksales I went to (all the books I can fit in a paper shopping bag for $5 (I fit 50), all the books I could fit and carry into a standard filing box for $7 (I fit almost 70)...plus my weekly trips to Goodwill...well I have no bed :blink: my room is only 10' by 10' and unless I wished to get rid of my other furniture (queen sized bed, 1 night table and 1 dresser) I had to start piling books and stuff on the floor. well that's now done since I have no more room for that and my clothing so I began to pile books on my bed...and now I have no bed to sleep on >.<;;

luckily my boyfriend is giving me the extra room at his new apt. when he moves in later this month so i've already got 4 shelves to build and put in there...

 My first thought on reading this was an announcer type voice saying:

"It's 10 o'clock. Do you know where your books are?"

There is a book that Apolonia sent me that I was dying to read but didn't start it straight away because I had other owed books to read first. Then I was talking to a non-bookcrossing friend of mine who mentioned she wanted to read this book. I told her "No problem, I will send it to you when I am done." Thinking she'd see the BC label and join up. Problem is I could NEVER find the book again. I have torn my house apart to no avail. Then about 3 moths later I get an email that this book has been pulled out of a bookbox. :wtf:

Apparently, since I couldn't read it right then I tossed it into a box of books not realizing it was a bookbox, and I mailed the whole kit and caboodle off. :duh:

Luckily, the person who pulled it out of the box was nice enough to mark it reserverd for me and is sending it back when she is done.

I can honestly say I've done this too...more times than I'd like to, that's for sure.

HoserLauren - August 6, 2007 02:18 AM (GMT)
Happens all the time!!

candieb - August 6, 2007 03:36 AM (GMT)
Nope. I know where each and every one of them are... somewhere between my bookcase, my car, my bedroom and one of my friend's houses.

LOL. I lose books ALL the freaking time. I have these beautiful built in book shelves that are organized, but I still lose books.

Breeni - August 6, 2007 04:46 PM (GMT)
All the time...

Kyrissaean - August 7, 2007 06:05 AM (GMT)
Yup, me too!

Sometimes it's not where I expected it to be, but even more often then that I'm remembering the cover wrong which makes me blind to the real thing. Like, I'm sure the cover is yellow with dark blue writing so I no matter how many times I see the correct book it doesn't register because in reality the book is dark blue with yellow writing. I almost had to cancel a PBS book someone had ordered from me last week because I couldn't find it anywhere. It was purple, and I was looking for hot pink.

I feel so much less like a knob now...

I called my mother and my sister to ask them if for some reason I had loaned the book to them...neither of them knew what I was talking about. :P

That's what happened to me once; I was going through my BC shelf to weed out stuff I could wild release (find it on the list, then go physically find it on the shelf, box, whatever), and couldn't find Black Notice by Patricia Cornwell anywhere. I searched high and low and it was nowhere to be found, so I actually made a journal entry saying I had lost the book and set it to traveling!
Then like three months later I was at my mom's and I saw Black Notice sitting on her counter; I said Mom, where'd you get this? and she's like, duh, you gave it to me, don't you remember?

Edited to Add: my mom didn't actually say "duh", she's not quite that cool, but it was there in the tone of her voice! :P
