And, if you have any problems with BookMooch, let me know and I'll try to get them sorted out for you. :D

katybean - January 21, 2007 02:53 PM (GMT)
I put loads of books on there (well enough to give me one point), and did a request for a book - but nobody requested any of my books and I find it hard to get points if you understand what I mean??

Besides the relay forum, BM becomes my next favourite book site, darn addictive...

giz-angel - January 21, 2007 10:11 PM (GMT)
I love bookmooch, me!

I think it really ebbs and flows
sometimes I get no mooches for a long time
then somehow I've managed to get seven mooches in the past week

I've gotten a lot this past week, too. I think it's harder for international folks because it takes more points. I've had a great experience on bookmooch.

malagan - January 25, 2007 07:35 PM (GMT)
I have been deleting books from bookmooch because there were so many requests I could not cope with the postage anymore :D

But where is your shelf now? I was going to look at it if I wanted to take something ;) :o

Breeze144 - January 27, 2007 04:23 PM (GMT)
I joined! Finally! I'm Breeze144 over there too....but I have almost no inventory right now.... :(

wss4 - January 27, 2007 07:54 PM (GMT)
It comes in spurts for me. I just added a bunch to my shelf and got a couple requests. But as long as I have availble points to order books, I am happy.

Breeze I am going to look you up and add you to my friends list.

mellonhead - January 30, 2007 03:25 PM (GMT)
hey morsie, what's up with Bookmooch? It's down again this morning.

zzz - January 30, 2007 03:31 PM (GMT)
It seems it's chronic problem with BM :(

morsecode - January 30, 2007 04:31 PM (GMT)
Server problems b/c of so many users
John's trying to fix some of the things that are causing the site to crash so much
unfortunately some of the fixes cause other problems :(

Anyway, I emailed him a little while ago and he said he was working on the site

appaloosatb - January 31, 2007 02:26 AM (GMT)
I'm a member of PBS but never joined BM. What do you folks think, is it better/worse than PBS? What are your favorite and least favorite things about the site?

CheriePie - January 31, 2007 03:24 AM (GMT)
I can't really say which I like better. It's hard to really compare them because they're so very different from each other in every possible aspect.

Purely for selection and getting all the books I want (even if later rather than sooner): PaperBackSwap. For being more open and feeling like you have a say in what's going on in the community: BookMooch. The wishlist features on each both work completely differently too. So it's nice sometimes to not have to "wait in line" if you're quick with the fingers. But browsing stuff on BookMooch can be a huge hassle because the categories aren't set up well.

So I would have to say that I wouldn't do without either. Though I'm also in TitleTrader and FrugalReader, throwing things out there once in a while that don't go on either of the other 2 sites, and those two don't rise to the top like BM and PBS do.

lauraloo29 - February 6, 2007 08:30 PM (GMT)
I have recently been enjoying myself on Bookmooch. I've been able to find a few wishlist books and so far everyone has been very nice. I actually have been rotating my inventory. I look to see if anyone has a book on their wishlist. I also try and make sure if there are already 10 copies of a book, not to put it up. :D

wss4 - February 6, 2007 08:36 PM (GMT)
I would have to say that if I had to give one up it would be BookMooch. But only because I really dislike the way that the wish list feature works, and it is so very hard to get folks to see your books. There is no new books posted feature and unless someone is looking for a specific book that you have or happens upon your Inventory it is hard to let people know what you have.

Also the way that things are marked as received bothers me a bit. There really is no follow up like at PBS. Once you mail something or request something you are pretty much on your own as far as contacting folks about sending. Also people have the ability to delay sending a book which means that you never really know if a book is going to be sent or not and you may end up having to cancel if the person does not respond to your emails.

On the other hand BookMooch has a few features that I like better than PBS. You have the ability to choose who you are mooching a book from, so you can check out folks history and such. It is also much easier to post older books or books that don't have your typical ISBN than it is on PBS.

I find that between the two sites all of my needs are met and I enjoy using both.

I just joined bookmooch, so we'll see how it goes. Just wondering, is it always insanely slow?

It was previously, though it should be speedier now based on some fixes John put in. I haven't caught up with the BookMooch mailing list in the last day so perhaps there was something new he added back in today that slowed it down.

But yes, he's been fixing things that were causing slowdowns in the code, and causing server crashes, and then once all those were ironed out, planned to go back and start adding in new features again. But he wanted to get things stable first. But I just look at it as, the server's often in a state of flux as things are changing, though he does his best to stay on top of them.

Thanks, Cherie. Another question - can I purchase credits on bookmooch like I can on PBS?

No you can not. You have to wait till you have enough points either by posting books, or having books mooched.

What is your username over there? I was going to add you to my friends list but it say there is no member by your name. :(

I'm appaloosatb there, the same as here. That's too bad that I have to wait to build up my credits, there are a lot of books from my wishlist available and I'm greedy!  (Although the LAST thing I need is more books :bash: ). If only I hadn't pared my AVL collection down before the move...

Found you there and sent a friend invite! :) Here she is everyone :D

azuki - February 9, 2007 09:07 PM (GMT)
I am Azuki on both PBS and BM! I use both because I find some of my wishlist books on PBS and some on BM, so it's hard to give up one. Though one time when I post a book on both sites, I got a request from both within minutes of each other. I have fewer points on BM so I ended up sending my book there.

I like the website layout of BM better, it's easier to add books, and it being intl makes it easier to find books not readily available in US. But I don't like how, if you are not online a lot, you will not likely get a hot book. It is a emotional rollercoaster to see a email saying your book is posted, clicked and find that it's gone.

Also, BM's categories are awful! The other day I was trying to browse to see what Asian American books they have. And what did I find? Little Women by Luisa May Alcott! Jonathan Livingston Seagull! (ok there was a seagull guru with a Chinese name...) Dances with Wolves!! (I thought those were Native Americans??) The Cat Who series (was that a Siamese cat?) ... I can go on and on... but basically, I want to say, that's so ridiculous!! PBS has a much better system.

morsecode - February 10, 2007 03:32 AM (GMT)
The categories actually get pulled from the amazon database
I know they are absolutely horrid
I do all my searches by author or title :shedevil:

Are there any audiobooks on BM?

Yup, though they're often a bitch to find. Perhaps morsie will pipe up with some suggestions...

For the time being, I know many people have been given to announce it on the bm discussion list when they've added new audio books to their inventory. I know this doesn't help you now, though maybe you could search the BM forum (which is really just an interface to the mailing list) if that's possible.

Sorry I don't have any more suggestions than that. I don't really do audiobooks myself.

morsecode - February 11, 2007 02:22 AM (GMT)
They are pretty impossible to find at the moment
Right now the best bet is checking the forums... I've been trying to make a quick post whenever I add an audio

I'm hoping that once John gets some of the problems sorted out that something we can have is the ability to search by binding type - that would make gettting to the audios much easier ;)

Nope, currently the forums are still just the web interface to the discussion lists. John has said that a regular forum is on his to do list though. But with all the other issues that have cropped up, I'm sure this one has been pushed down on the list a little bit until everything else is stable. But eventually... *taps fingers*

The constant crashing and memory problems that morsie talked about on the first page of this thread. If you visit the discussion list, John keeps everyone up to date there.

morsecode - February 13, 2007 03:22 PM (GMT)
Eventually I think John is planning on getting some real forums (right now the forums are just a different version of the email discussion list)

but, like Cherie said, most of the improvements are on hold until some of the bigger problems are sorted out. We've been getting a few improvements recently, which is good.
Unfortunately the fact the BM is so popular (which in itself is a really good thing) exacerbates the problems. I think the main problem is with memory bloat (not that I really understand what that is). John's been trying to get it fixed once and for all, but occasionally the fixes make the problems worse and occasionally the fixes cause changes that everyone complains about.

Anyway if you have any specific questions you can always PM or email me. I'll try to remember to posts updates here, but I'm sure that sometimes I'll forget

Different people will have different opinions, but I know shaunie and I are in agreement that we list whatever. Life is too stressful already without having to worry about who doesn't want their books listed where, some don't mind, some do, so we decided fuck 'em... ;) we'll do what works best for us! Right shaunie?

I don't recall if it was this thread or it might've actually been the PBS one in this same forum where we discussed this a little more too...
