Title: Do you ...?
daughterofcokie - July 31, 2007 01:07 AM (GMT)
Do any of you buy new books and then bookcross them when you're finished? Or do you try to sell them somewhere? I am just curious because I've got a lot of new books lately and can't decide what to do with them when I'm done ...?
terrafreaky - July 31, 2007 01:19 AM (GMT)
I used to sell on Ebay/Amazon before I got into Bookcrossing. Now I am wayyy too lazy to sell so I bookcross books instead.
chambejd - July 31, 2007 01:45 AM (GMT)
I used to take some of my newer books to the local consignment shop which worked out well. I don't do it anymore because of my schedule and I didn't make a lot of money but it usually covered the cost of my buying the book at the thrift store.
One of my books released at the consignment store resulted in a new member.
karendawn - July 31, 2007 02:07 AM (GMT)
I do occasionally buy new books (usually those that I don't want to wait to read, like the Kim Harrison books). If I'm not keeping it in my PC, I pass it along to someone here or on PaperBackSwap.
PepperVL - July 31, 2007 02:31 AM (GMT)
If I buy a book new, it's because I'm 99.9% sure I want it for my PC. Therefore, no, I don't bookcross it (except occasionally to trusted friends who I know will return it in the same condition I sent it to them).
Now, every once in a while, I buy a book and it's not as good as I thought it would be, and then I'll bookcross it. And of course, I do buy books for exchanges, etc. as I don't do PBS or BookMooch or the like. :D
geishabird - July 31, 2007 02:43 AM (GMT)
I've never really differentiated between books I buy new vs. books I buy used. I cross 'em all equally. :D
JessicaEby - July 31, 2007 02:51 AM (GMT)
I do sometimes, but if I bookcross a new book, I've usually got a couple of copies, and I usually buy them if it's a really amazing sale! :D
freelunch - July 31, 2007 02:54 AM (GMT)
I don't "wild release" books I've recently purchased, but I send plenty out in book relays, as RABCKs or I release them via the Bookcrossing Zone I set up at work.
azuki - July 31, 2007 02:54 AM (GMT)
Depends, if it's a hard cover that would fetch $15 or more I may.
More likely, if it's a popular title I will mooch or pbs it for credits. (and more likely PBS because w bookmooch I am never fast enough...)
EllyMae58 - July 31, 2007 03:02 AM (GMT)
Yes, I buy new books, and yes, everything gets BookCrossed. Or PBSd. I do not sell my books.
wss4 - July 31, 2007 03:37 AM (GMT)
I don't buy a lot of new books because I have so many in my TBR mountain, but now and again I do.
I don't sell any.
I Bookcross them and usually save the newer more popular ones to use here in swaps and VBBS. The rest I put on PBS & BookMooch so I can get credits and get more books. lol
apolonia - July 31, 2007 03:43 AM (GMT)
I usually bookcross them whether they are new or old. Before or while I am purchasing it I am already thinking about who might want it, or if it will be a popular swap book.
CheriePie - July 31, 2007 09:56 AM (GMT)
Like others, I don't differentiate. I haven't had to buy books for awhile now since everything comes up for me on PBS or BM, or else via a swap, VBB, RABCK, or now because I'm the Sweeps Wiener. :P
Even stuff I keep for my PC (LKH, Kim Harrison, Sookie books) has come up on PBS before I'm even ready for it. However, I've been known to buy these ones too, and if someone on BC wants to RABCK them to me, I do mention that it's going to my PC just in case they wanted it to continue to travel. (Not that it won't once it's in my PC. Like Pepper, I lend PC books out to people I know, both BookCrossers and non. Whether it'll be journaled or not would depend on whether they're a BXer or not.)
I've never considered selling them. Too much hassle, and then you enter into a more stringent agreement about condition, mailing time, etc. since money is being exchanged and I really can do without that hassle.
As to what I do with them after... whoops, that was the original question wasn't it? I'll either use them in a swap, VBB, or put them on BM or PBS. Which I do after really depends on the book itself, wicked new release, lots of wishlists, etc. But I usually try to get them to an Obsessor first via a swap or VBB if it's in high demand, rather than put it on PBS or BM. :) Cuz I  u guys!
Breeze - July 31, 2007 11:03 AM (GMT)
I don't sell but I do use boomooch.com. Especially for newer or really popular books. Other wise, I swap, wild release or bring them to meet-ups!
Daelith - July 31, 2007 01:19 PM (GMT)
If I like the book, I'll make it part of my PC. If I'm pretty sure I'm not going to read it again, I'll bookcross it or trade it at a used book store. Depends on my mood and if I'm really in need of a book shopping fix.
Books I know not many would be interested in, especially people here, and used book stores won't take, I've been selling on E-bay. Mainly Silhouettes that I've had in the closet for a couple of years now. It is a bit of a hassle, but I figure getting a little something for them is better than nothing, plus it gets them out of the house.

I'm an equal opportunity bookcrosser too  Just sent my copy of HP7 to Rosie.
SciFisstrs - August 1, 2007 04:20 AM (GMT)
If I buy new books I usually bookcross them unless I'm keeping them for PC.
caligula03 - August 4, 2007 05:28 AM (GMT)
Some I keep but most of them I take to our monthly BC meetings and release them in person to other BCers. Or I offer them up on relays.
SimplyCee - August 9, 2007 01:21 AM (GMT)
It depends. I don't buy books too often. When I was in college, I went to the local library about once a week and when I'm at home my sister buys all the books. As for the books that I actually do buy, if I really really adore the book, I just won't register it and I'll keep it. I usually decide when I buy the book [new or used] whether I'm going to register it on BC.
AceofHearts - August 10, 2007 02:19 AM (GMT)
I bookcross everything :)
Gothamgal - August 10, 2007 02:44 PM (GMT)
I tried to sell a book on EBay once. Turns out the author of the book replied to me and asked me to keep the book... Since then, I've decided not to do any book selling on eBay.
Before Bookcrossing, I used to be very into a cool little used book store near Mansfield, OH (Holly's Bookrack) that was awesome. Seriously, I spent double what I brought in, but her credit was fair and she had a really cool cat... etc.
Now that I live near Akron, I go to a local used book store, but not so much. They're credit policy is different and I think I have about $15 in credit with them that I'm not sure I'll ever use. But it is a good place to find books for theme-boxes if I don't have any that I want to give up.
I've been really good lately (other than the monthly Liesure Horror Bookclub) and didn't buy a book about 2 months before HP7 came out and ever since. Of course, I have been going to the library like crazy... And going through Mt. TBR.
If I'm still good, I might treat myself to a Barnes and Noble spree at some point in the future...
CdnBlueRose - August 10, 2007 03:09 PM (GMT)
I've bookcrossed lots of new books - I bookcross everything! :)
Marlene - August 10, 2007 04:41 PM (GMT)
Books are very expensive around here. We buy secondhand books at the same cost you can buy it new in The States.
So I must admit I do have a hard time releasing my newly bought books, but I do it on occasions. Used them for swaps and then it is like a party for me, I am so happy I cna offer something good. :D
I just received a request for some books on my available shelf. My shelf was not organised because I had not been active. for 4 books, but 2 of them are books I bought new and I want to keep for my personal collection to re read. (Dean Koontz) One of them is registered by another Bookcrosser, but its book 2 of a series and I am waiting for book 3 to be published.
I know I have to re read book 2.
The same thing happened when book 2 came out. I had already released book 1 of this series so I had to buy book 1 because I had forgotten the story.
I guess I should just release book 2 and buy it new. :)

What? What was the reason he she did not want you to sell it? Now you have made me curious
Gothamgal - August 10, 2007 05:01 PM (GMT)
I said something to the effect of, I'm not going to read this again, so I'd like it to go to someone else in my item description, after the book description.
The author contacted me and stated that she wished I would keep it and maybe eBay wasn't the best place to find a buyer. She suggested I hold onto it for a while.
I was selling it for under $5 with shipping, so I don't know if she thought that money was hers or something because it was her book?
I ended up not getting any bids and bookcrossed it later, I almost wanted to send it to her, but I didn't.
Since then, I haven't much felt like offering up anything on eBay.
I thought it was weird and random when it happened, but I didn't think of the bigger picture until just recently.
Marlene - August 10, 2007 06:16 PM (GMT)
Or maybe she did not like what you wrote. Not good for her selling her books, that you wrote you did not want to read that book again.
This is so weird.
Can you tell me who it was? If not, no problem. ;)
