Title: Advertisements

SandDanz - January 19, 2007 02:43 PM (GMT)
There is a minimum fee of $5 that will get rid of the advertisements on the top of the page. MissyZ had paid that initially when the forum was originally put up, but as their had been ads the last few days, that must've run out. How it works is: every 1,000 hits deducts $0.15 of the money... when the money runs out, the ads pop back up, so... I've added $5 on there for now because I was already tired of looking at the ads. I can add on to the money at any time, so if anyone does want to help alleviate the ads in the future (as I don't know if I'll be able to always add money on), please contact me for my paypal account and I'll add the money towards the ad-removal immediately.

Thanks!

How many hits does this place get? What is classified as a "hit"?

I hate the ads, so would happily contribute in the future, but it would be nice to know how often it will be needed - so I guess since you just put the $5 in, you can let us know when that runs out and we can see how long it takes. (If it's every week, that could get pretty expensive, but it it's every month or so it wouldn't be too bad.)

And by the way, I don't think that I've said thank you yet - so thank you!!

I haven't found where I can track that yet, but I'll see what I can find.

ETA: Okay... found it! Right now it says we have 30692 ad credits left. I'll try to track it and see how it goes.

Hmm...the ads are back. Looks like $5 doesn't last very long. :(

Nope, that's what I was thinking. I did receive $10 from someone towards them, but didn't bother to put it in for the advertisements and have contacted the person. The ads aren't that noticeable and annoying so I don't really think it's worth paying for their removal... maybe something else can be worked around down the road, but in the mean time, I think that we should put money towards our own domain name, bandwidth, and maybe a few more features... but first I gotta figure out how much those things cost and if it's worth it.

will do... I'll post something once I figure out what's going on and what all is involved. I'll give all the details I can find so you all know EXACTLY what is going on. :)

The ads don't bother me. I don't think it's worth the money to keep them away. I can just ignore them. ;)

HoserLauren - January 22, 2007 09:48 PM (GMT)
I don't see any ads.

MWahahahahahahahhahaha

The ads don't bother me either. Ads pretty much never bother me except for ones that do those rainbow high-speed flash. Oh, and there's one out now thats "kill the mosquito" and it buzzes annoyingly. But I'd rather see any money we collect put towards a memorable domain name.

I only see some text only ads some of the time... Not hard to ignore those.

cheesygiraffe - January 22, 2007 10:03 PM (GMT)
I don't have a problem since they are text ads. I have AdBlock extension on my Firefox browser and I can make those puppies disappear. ;)

Ah, that works really well! No more ads for me either. :) Thanks for mentioning it.

Okay, I use Firefox and I never noticed AdBlock before... that's AWESOME... it looks pretty seamless too, can't even tell there WAS an ad there!

I can get the domain name for $6.95 through GoDaddy or Registerfly. I already have accounts at both as I own 20 domain names myself so I'm very accustomed to dealing with them, configuring the DNS (domain name servers) and all that kind of stuff, so I'll happily handle that side of things.

Shaunie has been talking to me too about taking over the swap site, and I figured we'd discuss that in a separate thread as to what, if anything, could be improved, is no longer needed, etc... So once we decide on a domain name for our forum, we can use the same domain name to point to the swap site too (even if it physically resides on a different server). Cool, huh?

cosmic-gin - January 23, 2007 10:14 AM (GMT)
Sounds great Cherie - you're such good value and not just a pretty face

SandyDandy let me know when you need some mulla and I'll transfer it to ya :D

SandDanz - January 23, 2007 01:07 PM (GMT)

I don't mind the ads- the only one I noticed said something about "insomna?" and I was on in the wee hours, so I thought it was pretty funny.....

I know this is a moot point now, but as I was puttering around, I took the time to figure this out, so I wanted to put the numbers down somewhere.

Ad Removal Rate: $0.15 per 1,000 page views.

We average around 3K page views per day, give or take.
We will spend 45 cents per day in ad removal fees
At this rate, it'll cost around $13.50 per month in ad removal fees.

IMO, it's definitely not worth it, for that price, to pay for ad removal. At that rate, we could go with their monthly hosting, or even purchase the software ourselves and recover the cost in a year's time.

Of course, for anyone using Firefox, simply install the Adblock extension from http://adblock.mozdev.org/ or https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/10/

I don't propose to bring up this discussion again, unless others feel it necessary. I simply wanted to put these numbers somewhere. :D
