Title: Need advice/recommendations
Description: on fantasy series books
appaloosatb - July 22, 2007 08:56 PM (GMT)
Hi all,
I'm weeding out Mount TBR and trying to decide whether I want to collect all the books in a few series or if I should just pass on the books I already have. If you've read any of these series, what did you think of them?
Angus Wells The Godwars
David Eddings The Belgariad
Mercedes Lackey Dragon Jousters
R. A. Salvatore The Hunter's Blades Trilogy
Raymond E. Feist The Serpentwar Saga
Robin Hobb The Farseer
Sharon Green The Blending
Tad Williams Otherland
Tad Williams Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn (I've already read the first in this series and liked it, but would have to reread it before starting #2 - is the series worth it?)
Tanith Lee Unicorn series
Terry Brooks Shannara Trilogy
Terry Brooks Magic Kingdom of Landover books
Terry Pratchett Discworld books (do these have to be read in order?)

Tad Williams Otherland Terry Pratchett Discworld books (do these have to be read in order?) |
These are the only two I can comment on at the moment as I am also working on collecting some of the others. :giggle:
The Otherland series by Tad Williams is probably the best series of books that I have ever read. I very rarely reread a book. So far I think the only book I have ever reread was 'The Stand' by King as it was my favorite book of all time, but I would reread the Otherland books no problem. In fact I just grabbed the first one out of the fantasy VBB so that I could reread it as well as let my dd read it. They are huge books, but you get so involved in the story that you will breeze through them.
DiscWorld books -- I would say definitely read. I only recently started reading them. Have read probably the first 6 or so and have most of the rest. (though not all, still collecting) Can not wait till I get the chance to sit down and read some more of them. I totally enjoyed all of the ones I have read so far. Ad for reading them in order, everyone says no. I of course am anal and have been reading them in publication order, simply because they seem to make sense that way to me. Some characters are introduced in early books and then later books center around them. But I think that as I get more into the series I will be more inclined to read them according to the 'DiscWorld Reading Order' chart that I have saved on my pc.

I'm no use at all on this - I do have some of those magic kingdom books on bookmooch cos a friend gave them to me :)

The only one I have read from your list is the magic kingdom of Landover series. I really enjoyed it. Other than that I'm afraid I'm not much help.

Angus Wells The Godwars - Never Heard of It
David Eddings The Belgariad - One of my favorite authors... has a very special place in my heart and I probably re-read this series every 2-3 years if not more often
Mercedes Lackey Dragon Jousters - good if you like Lackey. Interesting Egyptian type setting.
R. A. Salvatore The Hunter's Blades Trilogy - Never read it
Raymond E. Feist The Serpentwar Saga - LOVE it. However, you need to read the Riftwar Saga first. Every time I pick up a new Feist book, I'm drawn in to a wonderful world and I have all these books in my PC
Robin Hobb The Farseer - Love it. Awesome books. I'm now trying to get the next to series set in that world for my PC
Sharon Green The Blending - never heard of it
Tad Williams Otherland - Haven't read it, though it's on mount TBR
Tad Williams Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn (I've already read the first in this series and liked it, but would have to reread it before starting #2 - is the series worth it?) - Again, haven't read it, but I've heard good things
Tanith Lee Unicorn series - A friend really likes these, but I've never read them
Terry Brooks Shannara Trilogy - My brother really liked these. I've never read them
Terry Brooks Magic Kingdom of Landover books - cute and fun. Very fast reads
Terry Pratchett Discworld books (do these have to be read in order?) - MUST READ. No, they don't have to be read in order. I know Karendawn has a link to suggested reading. If you like Christopher Moore or Tom Holt, you'll like these.

Charlaine Harris Sookie Stackhouse series |
Definitely. This is a good light read. Never takes me more than a day to read one of the books and they are fun. The last one to come out was great!!

Charlaine Harris -- Sookie is a definite YES!
Out of the rest of these -- I loved Eddings Belgariad series and Terry Brooks Magic Kingdom.
The Tanith Lee Unicorn series -- I really liked the first one - she should have stopped there.

| Robin Hobb The Farseer |
Haven't read the other comments yet, but Robin Hobb is awesome. One of the few authors that I buy in hardback (from the UK even because they come out a few months earlier) because I love her books so much!

I've heard that from several people, but have never read anything by him (her?). Which book do you suggest a newbie to start with?

Her.

She's on the left. I'm on the right. :D
There are three trilogies that she has that are intertwined. Here's the reading order (and I recommend reading them in exactly this order):
Farseer Trilogy:
Assassin's Apprentice
Royal Assassin
Assassin's Quest
Liveship Traders Trilogy: (these don't continue with the same character but it's the same world and one character from the Farseer books has an important part)
Ship of Magic
Mad Ship
Ship of Destiny
Tawny Man Trilogy:
Fool's Errand
The Golden Fool
Fool's Fate
Then she has another trilogy which is set in a different world. I don't like it as much as the others but because I love Robin Hobb, it's still a darn good trilogy.
Soldier Son Trilogy:
Shaman's Crossing
Forest Mage
Renegade's Magic
That last book isn't out in the US. It just came out in the UK and I got my copy last week. I'll be reading it this week.

I love the Sookie Stackhouse series! I wouldn't miss this one.

Thanks Karen -- I think I may have a copy of Assassin's Apprentice at home in my TBRs. If so, I guess I should move it up on the stack.

These are the ones from your list that I've read and enjoyed. Pratchett is the best of the lot although he has a few stinkers under his belt too. The discworld books don't have to be read in order although there are groupings of books that build on each other.
