I just like Facebook better than the other ones I've tried so far

I love the gifts you can give people (you pay for them, but the $ goes to breast cancer research - I made cheesy join so I could give her the cute little giraffe :rolleyes: ) [though there's also a "free gift" application now]

They keep coming up with new "applications," things you can add to your profile - like maps showing where you've traveled, movie ratings, etc

I guess my point is that I'm not worried about *you* (the bookobsessing folks that I feel like I "know") seeing my profile - it's those weirdos lurking out there on the internet ready to steal my identity and stalk me to my house and oh, I don't know, just all the general hoo-ha about being careful online.

Most of all, I suppose, I don't want somebody to find a book registered by Potok-fan and easily find out Potok-fan's real name. They can already find out immediately which town I live in, and with just a little searching figure out a lot more about me... And I honestly don't know how much to fret over that.

I have a couple of ways around the RL thing - a post office box in another suburb to where I live and the name I use online isn't my full name and isn't traceable via phone books etc. I guess if someone was determined they could find me, but I figure that I am so not worth the bother! :giggle:

I know what you mean it's a bit disturbing in some ways especially considering where I work... but I guess there are always ways.....

I think the way around that is to use different screen names for different things. I'm Fantasy here and on BC, but that's pretty much it. It's also my AIM screennname but it's been my screenname since 8th grade. So if someone who knows my screenname came across something with Fantasy221 on it, it's likely they'd know it's me, but these are the people that have known me for more than half my life, so I don't see them stalking me. I have 3 other screennames/alter egos at the other places I post at frequently, and as far as I can tell, there isn't much linking those screennames together.

I also frequently do a Google search on my real name to see what comes up and make sure it's all stuff I know about.

I have more info on FB than on any other of the social networking sites
but I have my security setting restricted so random people just can't see anything besides my name and picture
I mean I want friends from HS to find me so I have to use my real name (including my maiden name), but I'm not so keen on random people browsing my page (that's one of the reasons I got rid of Orkut because really random people kept visiting my page and it made me a bit uncomfortable).
What I worry about on FB actually is that some of my work colleagues are my friends and I don't want them to know how much time I waste online :lol:

Actually, if someone really wanted to stalk me and no one at all has even tried then they'd could find ways around all of that. :P
