Title: Books to Movie news
karendawn - January 17, 2007 03:36 PM (GMT)
I just read this info and had to start this thread over here because I'm excited (though a bit nervous). It's actually TV series news rather than movie.
HBO Acquires "A Song of Ice and Fire"
According to Variety, HBO has acquired the rights to George R.R. Martin's bestselling fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire.
The series will be turned into a dramatic series to be written and executive produced by David Benioff (Troy) and D.B. Weiss (Halo). Benioff and Weiss will write all episodes but one, which will be written by Martin.
HBO plans to dedicate a season to the plot of each book and there are currently 4 books in print with a 5th expected in 2007. Martin will co-executive produce the series.

I don't know this series, but it is usually a good thing when the author is involved in the production. I hope this is a wonderful tv creation of a series!
I saw an ad on tv last night for a movie of Bridge to Terebithia. This book by Katherine Paterson was one of my favorites growing up. I probably read it at least once a year. However, the movie version looks like it focuses on the fantasy world of Terebithia that the kids create rather than the relationship the two have. Hmmm... Not sure if I am going to see this one or not.
caseyw - January 17, 2007 03:53 PM (GMT)
Wow, I can't believe someone is going to do a show out of these books. There are so many characters and stories going on at once. I don't get HBO so I'll have to wait until they come out on DVD. I just hope they don't take as long to get the tv series done as it takes Martin to get one of these books published. Awesome books though. I highly recommend them to anyone who enjoys fantasy. Martin is an author who's not afraid to push the envelop with his characters...or his readers.

There is going to be a series called "Blood Ties" starting on Lifetime March 11th based on Tanya Huff's Victoria Nelson series. Here are some helpful links:

Heh, that's funny... I only just this past Friday got my Victoria Nelson books back from bookrabbit, who had them since 05 (with my permission, just taking her time with them as I said she could while they were languishing on my own Mt. TBR).
But as you said, it's time to move 'em up and get em read. I figured getting them back after nearly 2 years was hint enough, but now that mention the series Sand... well, I don't need to be hit in the head yet again to get the hint. :bash:
Thanks for the news!

Stephen King movies coming out this year:
1408 based on a short story in Everything's Eventual
The Mist based on a short story in Skeleton Crew, and one of my all-time favorites of his stories. It will star Thomas Jane, who was also in Dreamcatcher. Frank Darabont is doing it, so I am hopeful, but because it is a favorite story of mine I am also nervous that it will just stink. One of the things I like about the story is the open ending, and I read an article that says the ending of the movie will go beyond that. I know movies have to have a different type of ending--a more satisfying story arc, I guess, to draw a greater audience, but I will still be disappointed if there is any kind of "explanation" for the mist.

I thought she was hurt while filming The Invasion, during a getaway scene in a car. Let me go look it up...yup:
Nicole Kidman In Accident On Film SetI've been anticipating The Golden Compass film for quite some time as it's part of one of my favorite trilogies. (And I got to see the stage play when I was in London several years ago - very well done.) But I'm a bit worried about how it will turn out on the big screen as there are parts that could make people very upset (regarding religion especially), but if those parts are toned down to make it more appealing to audiences (which wouldn't surprise me much), much of the impact of the books will be lost. (And I personally don't see the books as anti-God as some people have claimed - just a different perspective regarding religion.)

Cecelia Ahern's novel,
PS, I Love You is due in 2008, with James Marsters of Buffy/Angel as a secondary character (Hilary Swank stars.)
The Jane Austen Book Club looks like they're changing it up--everyone in the cast looks far younger than I remember the characters being.

A modern-day fairytale--a major motion picture starring Christina Ricci, Catherine O'Hara, James McAvoy, and Reese Witherspoon.
Penelope Wilhern has everything a girl could want: A wealthy, socialite family, an enchanted bedroom and some of the coolest clothes around. There is only one problem: She was born into a cursed family and has the face of a pig.
Hidden away from the world, Penelope now finds herself subjected to a string of snobby, blue-blooded bachelors in a desperate attempt to find her a husband in order to break the curse. Though she yearns for something greater, what’s a girl to do when faced with a determined mother and her matchmaking sidekick? Hoping to snap a photo of the mysterious girl, mischievous tabloid reporter Lemon hires down-on-his-luck Max to pose as a prospective suitor and infiltrate the family. But when Max finds himself truly drawn to Penelope, he can’t bring himself to expose and disappoint her, so he just disappears. Fed up with this latest betrayal and determined to live life on her own terms, Penelope decides to break free from her family and go out into the world in search of adventure. Hiding her true identity with a scarf, Penelope discovers a wondrous world where freedom opens her eyes to possibilities she never knew existed. Making new friends along the way, she discovers happiness in the most unexpected places.
Marilyn Kaye lives in Paris, France. She taught children’s and teen literature at St. John’s University in New York and has written over 100 books for young readers.
Looks like this may be one of those that is a movie that they wrote a book to go along with. :whip:

I love the book of Bridge to Teribithia. It was a favorite of mine when I was younger and one that is still on my keeper shelf. I haven't seen the movie (have been afraid to, honestly) and so don't know how closely it follows the book (I just want to know mostly if the endings are the same - if they are, then I might go ahead and watch the movie). It's a powerful book about friendship.

I second this! It is one of my favorite books of all time. It is definitely one of the books I read many times as a youth and a couple of times as a grown up too! I have been afraid to see the movie too, since the previews seem to focus so much on the fantasy part when that is not really the focus of the book at all...

Well.... lets just say Disney embellished.. A LOT on the movie.
I really liked the book, and the basics of the movie are the same as in the book... but well, the movie (IMHO) sucked. (my mom hated it too)
To me, it was just one of those books that was good, but nothing to really make a movie of.
When the characters go into the woods and talk in the book, they don't really do that in the movie... that's where it gets embellished... it turns it into 100% fantasy, which I didn't really get the feeling of in the book. That ruined it for me.
The ending is the same as in the book, pretty much. It is changed a bit, but not much.
Don't let my opinon stop you tho... I just would see the movie at a cheaper theatre or time or wait to rent it.
