Title: Am I getting old or technically changelled?
Description: Ipod

I know these have been the rage for awhile but I got one for Christmas and wanted to put some stuff on it for my trip to the convention. It's a lot of work!! Everyone I know who has ones raves about it but I am really getting aggravated here. Is it just me?
EllyMae58 - April 18, 2007 02:55 AM (GMT)
Dunno. Don't have one, don't want one.

Um, well I have an iPod Nano, and putting music on it is just drag and drop from iTunes... is it different with the bigger ones?
CheriePie - April 18, 2007 03:48 AM (GMT)
I've had two Creative Labs MP3 players, but not iPods. With the iPods basically everything has to be done through the iTunes software which IMO is a huge PITA.
apolonia - April 18, 2007 05:54 AM (GMT)
I managed to figure it out. I think I was confused cause it was updating and I had to install something but not that I got tha straightened out all you do is buy the songs and plug it in.
I think I might become an addict of this!! I love the fact that songs are .99 cents. I hate buying whole cds cause usually I only like 1 or 2 songs. Now I just pay for what I like. No carrying cds, I'm almost afraid of how much I'm going to spend on songs though. I think I got 34 tonight and that was so easy to pick out. I'm trying to come up with some more that I really love.

Harrumph!!
In the UK downloading itunes costs 79p each which I've just worked out to be $1.59. Wish I could download from the US itunes site.

Do you have a Costco near you? I buy a $50 iTunes credit for $45 there....every little bit helps right?

I'll second that. My phone has a built in iPod and I have to use iTunes. I HATE iTunes. It's a leech like AOL.

I love my iPod! Yes, I too am addicted!
I'm indifferent about iTunes although I do love how it points me to songs that I may have never heard of. The majority of my music is ripped into iTunes from CDs I already own. I only occassionally buy songs through iTunes.
I also love podcasts! I download and listen to a bunch of my NPR stuff that is podcast.
morsecode - April 18, 2007 12:44 PM (GMT)
You can save yourself some money by loading the CDs you already own into iTunes instead of buying the songs from them.
I don't think hubby and I have bought a single song from them (excepting the free ones you got from soda caps a while ago)

Sorry...but I had to point out...I think you're typing-challenged as well! :P It made me laugh.

Girl... I am a mac girl!!! I love my mac, my iTunes, and my iPod! I tend to get pissy when I can't have my iTunes! <_<
And if your an audiobook girl... check out audible.com, they download into your iTunes, and go into your iPod really easy!
If you have problems or questions feel free to bug me with 'em!

I'm with Kel, Cheesy and Pepper. Don't have one and don't want one. *shudders* It's all I can do to keep computers going at my house. I'm irritated beyond all get out right now because I'm going to have to pay someone to reformat Brian's laptop because he can't be bothered to do updates on stuff to avoid spyware.

I love my iPod (though mine is one of the older models, so no pictures or video for me) and I haven't had any problems with iTunes. I've never purchased a song as I've just ripped CDs I already own.
I'll second the mention of audible.com - I've downloaded LOTS of audiobooks (2 each month) and it's been really easy to put them on my iPod. (In fact, tomorrow is my Audible day - so I get to go download 2 more audio books!)
I have a 20GB one and I think I'm now at that capacity, so I might have to remove some of the audiobooks for a while. Hmmm...or get another iPod! :D

I've never been much of an audio book person...but I'm going to give this a try. It's only $8 for each of the first 3 months.

My lack of desire has nothing to do with the technology. I'm just not into music.
Really.
The last time I bought a CD was, um... 2004?
And some people sent me stuff last year when I needed stuff to listen to at work... but I haven't gotten anything new since then.
I've never downloaded a song.
Yes, I'm weird.

I love audio books, and wish I had more.
One thing I'm planning on doing when I get a few more bills paid off is join Audible.

That's all I ever do. DH got me a Nano for while I was in the hospital for Harriet's birth. I've never downloaded a song. I'd much rather have the entire CD.

I though i did not need an ipod but my hubby bought me a nano for our anniversary and I like it a lot. It's great at the gym, and during long commutes to work. i think it's pretty easy to use.
I have not tried downloading audiobooks i after reading above posts and lookin at audible.com, I'm pretty tempted.
ETA : So I decided to sign up for audible. i have never listened to any audiobooks and decided to try. Any recommendations?

I was the same way. I love music but I NEVER thought I needed an iPod. I bought Hubby one for Christmas...and I am a gadget person so I figured why not buy myself one...particularly since I've been spending so much time on airplanes. I love it. Don't know how I lived without it.
I've never been an audio books person...I can't stay focused. Music is generally just background noise for me. When I was in college I was the person who could study in front of the TV because it was just background noise. I joined audible.com but we'll see how it goes. I did download my first book. Maybe it will be good bedtime listening.
I do have some questions...since I don't read instructions I don't really know how to use my iPod. When I'm listenting to Podcasts it seems that I have to listen to the entire Podcast. I can't stop in the middle and listen to something else...otherwise it restarts at the beginning. How does it work with a book? Can I switch between the book and music and have the book start over where I left off?

Well, it depends on what you like. I've been a member for almost a year and am very happy with most of the things I've listened to. :D If I thought I was going to like the book, I've liked it as an audio too.
I recommend listening to the little free sample of each book -- I love that feature! That way you won't spend money on a book only to find later that you don't like the reader. (Well, I usually adjust to the readers, but many people seem to have strong opinions about various readers, at least according to the reviews on the site!)
The only thing I don't like about audible is the "audible manager" program that they give you for burning CD's. It's terribly slow, and it just won't work right with my computer -- about 75% of the CD's I burn with that program end up filled with strange noises instead of words. The customer service guy was very nice but thought it was a problem with my CD players (all of them -- the one in the living room, the one in the car, the one in the bedroom, the one I tried at the neighbor's house just to check.... I think not!). Solution to the problem: ITunes burns them perfectly and twice as fast every time! :D
And add me to the list of people happy with IPods and ITunes. Quick and easy-peasy! I like the Nano much better than the Shuffle for audiobooks though -- better bookmarking, and it's easier to rewind and fast-forward. I haven't purchased anything through the store yet, but I probably will.

Yes, anytime you hit stop during the audiobook, it'll remember where you were and start again from there even if you listen to something else in between. (You need to be more careful with the teensy IPod Shuffle though -- with that one I don't recommend doing a lot of jumping between music and books or sometimes its little bird-brain will decide you want to start from the beginning of the book again. I bet you've got a bigger one, though!)
Anyway, I know the Nano (and I'm assuming the larger ones will have the same options plus possibly a few more) has a whole menu option just for audiobooks -- it's actually a subsection of the music menu. I just back out of the audiobook I'm listening to by hitting the "menu" button until I reach the menu I'm looking for and switch back and forth with no trouble. It's never forgotten where I was. :) Although until one of the more recent updates, every now and again an audiobook would pop up when I had my music set to shuffle all songs!
PepperVL - April 20, 2007 04:12 AM (GMT)
Now, see, I might like one for audio books, but since I cannot afford audio books or an iPod (or any other mp3 player) at the moment, it's a moot point.
