Title: New at Bookcrossing????

noumena12 - April 17, 2007 02:08 AM (GMT)
Okay...maybe I've missed this but I just noticed the "Catches and Releases" section. When you expand it you get a map showing the latest catches and releases. It's kinda fun!

Has this been here long and I wasn't paying attention????

CheriePie - April 17, 2007 02:11 AM (GMT)
I've only noticed it recently myself. I thought maybe it was a Wings only feature. But it could've also been added in with all their recent updates...

noumena12 - April 17, 2007 02:11 AM (GMT)
Ackkk!!!! I'm just sitting here watching the map change!!

I saw that too last night or the night before maybe, and wondered if it was actually real time as things were happening? I saw Caseyw catching and releasing books i think :D

noumena12 - April 17, 2007 02:28 AM (GMT)
Okay...apparently it has been there for 4 days and I'm just now noticing *smacks head*

apolonia - April 17, 2007 02:40 AM (GMT)
Am I missing something I don't see it

You don't see the link on the main page? or the section?

It is sooooooooooo addictive!

noumena12 - April 17, 2007 02:45 AM (GMT)
It appears just above home. I've got Cherie addicted now too!

CheriePie - April 17, 2007 02:50 AM (GMT)
yeah I'm gonna kill her! y'all will be calling up to our room or our mobiles at the convention... whatcha doin? ann and cherie answer in zombie like voices... watching the map

apolonia - April 17, 2007 02:54 AM (GMT)
I found the link but it will pull up for me, maybe its overloaded or something.

apolonia - April 17, 2007 02:59 AM (GMT)
ok got it, and WOW I only have seen it for a couple minutes and I am surprised at the number of anonymous finders. No one ever finds my books.

wss4 - April 17, 2007 03:33 AM (GMT)
I discovered it the other day and spent 30 minutes just watching it before I finally shook myself out of my daze. lol Very addicting.

PepperVL - April 17, 2007 03:34 AM (GMT)
Can't... look... away...

SciFisstrs - April 17, 2007 05:39 AM (GMT)
wow that map makes me dizzy
But it's fun :bananadance: Is that happening right now? People catching and releasing books I guess in real time?

camis - April 17, 2007 07:04 AM (GMT)
No I don't think it's real time. Someone did explain it on the BCUK list but I knd of flicked over it. As far as I remember it's on a 10 miute loop so if you watch long enough you'll see the same releases over again

Really? Well that bites!! :shedevil:

Though when I first came across it, late Friday night/Saturday morning I think it was, it was a lot slower and only changed like twice, whereas this time there was a lot more jumping around from country to country, which is why I for sure thought it was real time. But maybe just the Internet was slow that night then. :erm:

What point in time do they pull the 10 minutes from anyway? And is it always the same 10 minutes, or does it change every so often?

camis - April 17, 2007 12:23 PM (GMT)
I've just trawled through my emails and this is part of the post...

According to the forum the map is on a ten minute loop - the code goes and
gets about 30 new releases/catches every ten minutes.

So guess there is more in the BC forums about it if anyone wants to go and look!!

caseyw - April 17, 2007 01:14 PM (GMT)
Oh how fun!!! Just what I needed another site to keep watching throughout the day.

needmorezoloft - April 17, 2007 01:18 PM (GMT)
I noticed it the other day but didn't pay attention... now I'm scared to watch.. what if I never look away :o

caseyw - April 17, 2007 03:57 PM (GMT)
They tend to recycle quite a bit. I keep seeing the same one's pop up. I did see our Azuki on there.

EllyMae58 - April 17, 2007 04:15 PM (GMT)
I mentioned the map in Potok's Sunday thread about BC troubles.
I checked it out again today, but it bores me. I don't understand how ya'll are so fascinated by it.

caseyw - April 17, 2007 04:35 PM (GMT)
Well if they didn't keep reshowing the same books it might be better. I got bored with it real quick.

I think it will be fun to watch this coming weekend with all the convention releases.

I found myself just staring at it... then again I had nothing to do.

I did see Azuki on there several times.. I did get a bit bored with it, mainly because I noticed the loop. But I bet it gets good seeing all the good stuff y'all get this weekend!!!!

giz-angel - April 17, 2007 09:26 PM (GMT)
I too watched if for 2 minutes and then got bored! Short attention span maybe?

apolonia - April 17, 2007 09:52 PM (GMT)
You know what would be cool a map like that that shows a books line of travel. Although there wouldn't be as many updates since it would only work for books that were sent from one crosser to another.

PepperVL - April 17, 2007 10:00 PM (GMT)
I was just fascinated with the way it moved.

I wasn't even really reading the book titles or anything, I just liked watching the map move all by itself.

Hey... when you're easily amused, you're rarely bored.

Me too....
What were we talking about?

caseyw - April 20, 2007 12:22 AM (GMT)
I just saw one of Noumena's release flash across at the convention - Romancing Riley.

SciFisstrs - April 20, 2007 06:00 AM (GMT)
Because Turtle and I aren't bringing our laptops. I'm going to just put JE's in now. It'll be a surprise if people find them :)

caseyw - April 20, 2007 03:33 PM (GMT)
I see Nou and Breeni hard at work releasing in SC.

Also saw Kislany caught one in Portland, OR. Kis, are you stateside visiting and didn't tell us?

zzz - April 20, 2007 04:18 PM (GMT)
   doesn't work for me.
I saw it few days ago and forgot about it since I thought "Blank World map - big deal" <_<

zzz - April 20, 2007 04:23 PM (GMT)
It works!!!! :bananadance:
I saw Kis in Portland as well

I saw that too... Nou even caught one of my books that I donated! :giggle:

I love when it crosses the dateline, instead of just moving back and forth with the USA on the left and Europe on the right. :D

ETA: I do have a slight worry that it's going to increase the number of "fake" wild-releases. You know, "I'm releasing into the hands of my friend in Town, State, Country" instead of "in Controlled Release Country". 'Cos otherwise it wouldn't show up on the map! But that's going to really irritate people signed up for email release alerts. And certain stats freaks

zzz - April 20, 2007 06:04 PM (GMT)
they are repeating the same catches/releases for hours :erm:

Yeah, it tends to loop. I don't know how long it takes to update it with new stuff. I just released two more books while I was out running errands on my lunch hour.

I noticed one of your casey!

I think (and I'm not sure on this one) but it seams to me that when a new one comes in, they add it, but keep a loop of them that goes for like 10 mins or something. Because I'll watch it, have the loop down, and then a new one will pop up in the middle of them.

caseyw - April 20, 2007 08:05 PM (GMT)
I can't figure it out either.

Yep, I've been a little busy today releasing.

Thursday5 - April 20, 2007 08:40 PM (GMT)
The Catch and Release feature map is not working for me. I think it is because I am using Safari as my bowser.

I'd like to get Foxfire as my browser so I can view the map. Is it safe to download Foxfire or do I need to get a disk to download it?
