I saw this on the news this morning too, but forgot to post. I heard him speak once, and one thing he said was that reading was like the Western world's version of meditating. But instead of just rattling around in our own brain (I realize that someone who meditates might find this belittling - I apologize. It's what I remember him implying)... instead of that, we are meditating on/in another person's mind when we read.
An interesting way of looking at it.
