Title: BC Terminology Question

JessicaEby - April 8, 2007 03:32 AM (GMT)
What is a tell-a-friend referral? I just updated some stats on my profile and noticed that it says "tell-a-friend referrals: 1 all-time, 1 during the last seven days" new-member referrals are when someone joins after you telling them about it, or them finding one of your books or whatever and listing you as the member who referred them, right? And if so, what is a tell-a-friend referral? This is probably something really obvious, but... you never know unless you ask!

I used to think the "tell-a-friend" was when you filled out the little email thingy to "tell a friend" about BC. But it's that, PLUS anywhere you might have a referral link to BC, like on a blog or a webpage or in an email signature etc.

You know, my little "tell-a-friend" number has suddenly been getting some hits, and as far as I know I've never created any links or sent any emails directing people to the site. I never had any and suddenly I have 8! I'm not even sure if I've gotten 8 JE's from wild releases. :P

So I definitely don't know what it is.

Haha, that's just what I was thinking as I read EllyMae's post!

Thanks, though, Elly :)

You don't have to have sent out any emails. If you put a link that says
CODE
http://www.bookcrossing.com/friend/peppervl

or
CODE
http://www.bookcrossing.com/referral/peppervl

anywhere on the web - in your blog, in your signature here, in an automatic email signature, on your web page, etc. and someone not logged in to BC clicks on it, your tell a friend referrals go up.

That's what I already said! :P

I know, but they seemed focused on the email bit...

I understood, I just don't think I've done either one!

You probably did it once... somewhere... a long time ago.

I think people occasionally stumble on old links of mine I put out... I know I haven't put one out in a long time and I still have my numbers go up occasionally.

My # is like insane!
tell-a-friend referrals 193 all-time, 2 during last seven days

I don't even know that many people! Everyplace I have a link, its always the referal one, but where are all these people comming from? Am I really that popular?

Since I just got my stats done from that guy in Germany, I was playing with them last night, and I noticed that the names that are listed at the bottom, in the two screennames section, when you click on them, it brings you to their bookshelf using the Referral link, i.e. http://www.bookcrossing.com/mybookshelf/ne...zoloft/referral

So most likely all of us getting Stats pages done, and clicking on names from those Stats, is causing the jump in those tell-a-friend referral numbers! user posted image
