Title: Sad Day
Description: I had to put my foster dog to sleep
appaloosatb - April 6, 2007 02:43 AM (GMT)
We had to put my foster dog, Henry, to sleep today.
He'd been living with me for almost 30 days, and once he started feeling comfortable he started guarding his rawhides and would try to bite if someone tried to take one away from him or pet him when he was chewing on it.
Henry spent the first years of his life tied to a radiator in someone's apartment. His owner would let him outside to go to the bathroom and wouldn't confine him or even watch him, and Henry would get picked up by animal control for running loose. When animal control had picked him up a number of times, they told the owner that they would be neutering his dog before he could reclaim him - and the guy said he didn't want him then. After that, Henry spent 9 MONTHS in a shelter.
I know that the 30 days I had Henry living with me were the best of his life - he finally got to know love and get to experience snuggling on the couch and going on long walks. It was so hard to let him go.
I hope you're in a better place, Henry. A place where people don't suck. I'm so sorry.

I'm so sorry, what happened?
At least he was loved the time he spent with you.

Me too...you put him to sleep because he was protecting his bones? What did I miss?
Still, I know it's hard, I'm sorry Appa!!

I'm so happy he had the opportunity to know love and didn't die in the shelter. I just want to :whip: that previous owner, and NOT in a good way!!

Foster dogs are dogs that are currently living with a family (Appa in this case) for a brief time while a new permanet home is found, if the dog start getting aggressive at all (with food, toys, people, treats, etc) they need to be put to sleep because the ASPCA considers them unadoptable if they are aggressive at all. I don't work for the ASPCA or anything like that, I've just seen hours and hours and hours of "Animal Cops" on The Animal Planet channel.
{{HUGS APPA & HENRY}} You did all you could (and more!!) for him Appa, he's in a better place and Henry's previous owner will get what he deserves, I firmly believe that. The a-hole..
Henry is having a fantastic time with my 2 dogs Tasha & Dave. I am sure Dave was waiting for him with a never ending bone to chew on and a tennis ball! :) Tasha was probably laying on the nearest couch getting fatter..lol

I'm so very sorry Appa! I know how hard it is to let them go. But take comfort in know you showed Henry what it was like to be in a loving, nurturing home even if it was only for a short time. Thank you for taking care of him.

Oh appa I am so sorry to hear that!
May you take comfort in knowing that Henry's time with you was filled with love.
You'll be in my thoughts and prayers.

Yeah.. I once found a dog in the middle of the road during a thunderstorm. She was terrified and wouldn't come to me so I called animal control because I was afraid she would get hit or wouldn't be able to get home. I told them that if she wasn't claimed in the 3 day period that we would take her.
I took John out to see her 2 days later and found out that they had put her to sleep because she growled at the vet. I was appalled. First, she was in an unfamiliar situation. Second, an unfamiliar vet was trying to examine her. They didn't even call and tell us.
I just had a cat at the vet Tuesday and she screamed and tried to bite the vet assistant who was trying to hold her. My cats can be the most loving animals at home...but take them to the vet and you see their Jekyll/Hyde personalities. My vet always sends in a vet assistant to hold the animals when giving shots...and they always come with a towel and gloves just in case. Guess they are used to animals being hostile in that situation.

I'm sorry, sweetie. That's the hardest part of being a foster momma/rescue person, not being able to save every single one that deserves it. (((((Hug)))))

Aside from what everyone else said about food and toy aggression, the standards are higher for pit bulls. Unfortunately because they have such a bad reputation, they don't get second chances if they show food or toy aggression.
Where another breed of dog might get some slack, or go for desensitization training to try to break them of the habit, the pit bull is generally considered unadoptable. The whole zero tolerance policy thing.

I feel for you. I've been there with fosters and you are right you gave him the best 30 days that he ever had. Now he's in a place with no jerks and he is free.
Hugs

He looks just like my murray...I am sure he is in a better place. I hope that you can find comfort in the fact that you gave him the BEST month!
BTW..This is Murray :)

Oh I'm so sorry- hugs to you both. Fostering is such a wonderful thing but can be hard on us.
I just know my daughter is playing with Henry and all the others who have crossed over the rainbow bridge.
If she was anything like her mommy she could never have enough pets around her :)

You are an angel for fostering, Appa! Please be generous with the reminders to yourself that you gave Henry love, attention, and joy that he had not felt before (walkies too!).
My puppers are pitbull mixes and I agree that this is one of the breeds that is more strictly watched.
What the others said about Henry romping with a joyous heart with other dogs & people over the Rainbow Bridge - where he has his own Henry Corner where he can guard all the rawhides he wants - till you meet up with him again.
