Title: again with the smileys
Description: hooray for CheriePie

Potok-fan - April 3, 2007 11:46 AM (GMT)
After posting on chitchat about how much I like the new "rant" smiley, I realized maybe that discussion should have gone here. Now today I read Cheesey's worries about her son and thought, "We could do with more 'good vibes' smileys".

But now reading through this forum I see Cherie has already found one:
:pat:

:goodjob:

And I like this one, too: :yahoo:

I don't really have any suggestions or problems, unless it's that more than once I've almost clicked on this giggle, thinking it's just the regular smiley. :giggle: I kind of wish the regular smiley was in the first clickable box, but I'm probably a bit boring and vanilla in that way. So really this post is just to say thanks for seeking out such fun smileys!

Cherie is the best!!! :spank:

Awwww y'all are making me blush! Thank you for the kind recognition! :D

I don't really have any suggestions or problems, unless it's that more than once I've almost clicked on this giggle, thinking it's just the regular smiley.  :giggle:  I kind of wish the regular smiley was in the first clickable box, but I'm probably a bit boring and vanilla in that way.

Actually, when we were discussing it, we figured we'd take off the clickable area the smilies that were really easy to just type out manually, i.e. colon followed by right parenthesis for :) , to make room for the ones that weren't as easy.

So you can always get :) by typing
CODE
:)

:( by typing
CODE
:(

and ;) by typing
CODE
;)

The same holds true for :P which is just
CODE
:P

and :D which is
CODE
:D

Those last two were ones I was actually thinking of next to be taken off the clickable area (though they'd obviously still be available from the All Smilies page or simply by typing them manually) if there were others we found we were using a lot and wanted them moved to the clickable area.

Your post did make me wonder though... I had assumed, perhaps erroneously, that everyone realized that some of these smilies were actually easier to just type out rather than click on, but maybe that's not the case after all...

I'm interested to hear your thoughts, and others as well, on this...

needmorezoloft - April 3, 2007 08:43 PM (GMT)
I didn't know you could just type
CODE
:)
to get :)

Then again I'm a clicker :bash:

PepperVL - April 3, 2007 09:34 PM (GMT)
And I know the code for all the smilies I use regularly. I click on them only if I'm using several in a row.

Psst! That's
CODE

and I just typed it! :giggle:

EllyMae58 - April 4, 2007 12:59 PM (GMT)
I know a lot of the codes too. It's easier for me that trying to click, especially if the one I want isn't showing up and I have to bring that box up and then have to scroll through that box....

I didn't know we had a smiley thread or I would have posted my smilies for Cherie here instead of the other thread. Sorry Cherie!

I love this guy, by the way. Reminds me of Ike from South Park.

Awww poor Pepper! :pat:

Kel, That one you suggested for :badday: is terrific. As soon as I saw it, that's what I thought too. And I think it'd be a welcome addition here.

You know what we still haven't come across yet for bananas, is the cheering banana like we had over at the old forum. The one we've got now is the closest Sand and I could find.

Well, since we're all linking to places where you can find your own, I'll list the 5 places I have in a little mini-menu in my toolbar. All of course which I use in conjunction with the Smiley Xtra add-on for Firefox. (also can be found at the Firefox Extensions page).

Okay so here are mine, some of which y'all already know:

SmileyLegend
Planet Smilies
Smiley Arena
Full Smilies
Yelim's

A lot of them have good banana specific sections too. :bananadance:

Actually those ones usually look of higher quality too than some of them. That's why you'll notice that like 85% of what's up here looks similar like that, instead of like a hodge-podge of trashy looking.... !

and yup, I like the 2nd Loser one too!!

CheriePie - April 5, 2007 02:42 AM (GMT)
I was also thinking of getting rid of some that we didn't use that much if at all and that were there from the start, you know so it doesn't get too cluttered and all.

Like  (angel) was one of the ones that I thought should go, since we have :innocent: (innocent) but then I saw people using it recently when talking about wings, and I guess from that perspective, when referring to wings, yeah maybe it should stick around.

Since not a lot of peeps come in here, do you think I should start a poll to find out if people know they can type the codes themselves and not always have to click them?

Couldn't hurt. I was surprised when a couple people mentioned they didn't realize they could do that! I'm a typer not a clicker, so if I know the code, I just type it in.

I looked at the smileys earlier, and I was thinking you could remove  since we have :duh: ? (And I like :duh: better.)

You and Sand both... which is why :duh: got front page billing. :D

But as Smiley Goddess, I actually prefer  so that one's a present for myself, a pat on the back for all the good work I do. So nope, that one's not eligible to be removed. :P

We don't use  as much, but I've got one I like a lot better than this one where they just keep knocking their glasses into each other. Do y'all agree that we should replace our current cheers  with user posted image, or even user posted image.

I like user posted image much better myself.

Jumping back to the loser one for a second... I'm not sure that we'd use that one all that much as I don't really see us getting mad at one another. Ranting  when I uploaded, I was thinking more of our ranting about USPS rate changes, doctor's offices that keep you waiting and waiting :waiting:
But I almost didn't upload the  one for along the same reasons. But then I thought it was just too hilarious.

So I'm trying to keep it to ones that have to do with emotions and sentiments we find all of the members using in their everyday talking and conversing around here, which I guess is the best way to define how I decide what to upload and what not to. If it's something I think only I will use, or maybe someone else might next month, then I don't upload it...

ETA - Oh and I'd love to find a better one for waiting :waiting: This one I think looks kinda chintzy, but I figured waiting was also an emotion we all express here alot so it'd be useful to have.
Is this one better? user posted image or can you find anything better? I'd prefer not to have the smiley looking angry or mad as that's not the intention we want to convey...

camis - April 5, 2007 07:58 AM (GMT)

Me, I like EllyMae's "good vibes" and nmz's reading one. I love the cheering banana; I like the cheering ETA "dancing" banana. The whipping banana, not so much (this one has a so much more funny face- :whip: ). And I'm super-grateful that we don't have any of those bananas with breasts over here ... or Rastafari bananas and so forth. (do we have a
CODE
:shudder:
emoticon?)

One reason I like to click rather than type (besides not knowing the codes) is that I often go looking for one that seems to have the facial expression I want at that moment. It's a visual thing for me, not a word thing. So if I had to choose a word for this  , I'd probably choose "boggle" rather than "blink", but either way what I want is the expression.

So I'm also not so keen on the ones that take a long time (like "whine"). At least with  and  every variant looks like what it's supposed to be. Again - a visual thing. If you can't glance at it for a second and figure out what it is, I don't get so enthusiastic about it.

Thanks for letting me get this off my chest!

That's exactly why I was so glad to see a new hug that looked not so much like "I love you" but "I'm trying to cheer you up". :)

And I agree that it's nice to have a wings smiley but it doesn't have to be an angel.

CheriePie - April 5, 2007 10:26 PM (GMT)
Okay before I finish catching up on this thread, I uploaded a yellow waiting :waiting: one for the time being. It's better than the orange one anyway (and it looks like Kel came across a similar one too).

And I also replaced the old cheers with
I didn't see this being used a whole lot but perhaps with this new style one people may want to use it. We'll see...

ETA - Kel's waiting2 looks to be higher quality than the one I upped, so I'll change that over later.

Maybe I'll grab impatient too. I dunno... it's kind of big. And I don't want people looking angry if they're waiting for someone in a swap or something and use a smiley like that. But perhaps used outside of that context, it wouldn't be bad....
