Description: My new smileys don't work

redhot-brat - March 27, 2007 12:48 AM (GMT)
I just got a ton of new smileys (from smiley central) , but I can't seem to get them to work here in my posts. It says they work in blogs and my space, emails, and IMS .... any suggestions?

You may need to upload them to a free storage site and need to post the url from there when you want to use them. That's what I do with my extra smilies.

http://www.250free.com/

http://villagephotos.com/

http://photobucket.com/

Those are a few sites I use.

I thought about that. They have sooooo many though it'd take forever. I might just have to pick out a few I really like and just use them. THanks for the idea though. :)

I'd heard that that Smiley Central software contained adware anyway, so you're better off not relying on some proprietary software to tell you what it works with. Copy and paste works with everything. :)

If you're using Firefox instead of IE, check out the Smiley Xtra extension which will give you access to a whole bunch more smileys right from your sidebar. :D

I've also found some sites that have smilies, I can't remember them now, but they are free smilies and when you look at them on their site, it has the code to copy to use on another board with [ img ] codes or the < a href = > codes.

If I can remember them... I'll link 'em here.

(I have foxfire at home, and just tend to use those. )

Foxfire?

Is that like, backwards Firefox or something? Inverted?

I appreciate all the great suggestions and ideas. Here's what I'm getting.....

<a href="http://plugin.smileycentral.com/http%253A%252F%252Fwww.smileycentral.com%252F%253Fpartner%253DZSzeb008%255FZNxmk572MCUS%2526i%253D36%252F36%255F3%255F16%2526feat%253Dprof/page.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_3_16.gif" alt="SmileyCentral.com" border="0"><img border="0" src="http://plugin.smileycentral.com/http%253A%252F%252Fimgfarm%252Ecom%252Fimages%252Fnocache%252Ftr%252Ffw%252Fsmiley%252Fsocial%252Egif%253Fi%253D36%252F36_3_16/image.gif"></a>

That is what I get when I copy/paste

THE FOLLOWING ERROR(S) WERE FOUND
Sorry, dynamic pages in the [IMG] tags are not allowed

And that is what happens when I try to use [ img ] tags.

It won't allow me to add them into a photobucket account either ... it will allow you to copy the codes, but not paste them.

However it works just fine on email/IM .... though still waiting to see if those not using their system can view them or not.

At this point I'm starting to think even as cute as their smilies are they aren't worth the BS .... and they come with MyWebSearch whether you want it or not. (I don't). So I guess we'll see how long it lasts on my comp. Not thinking very long.

My WebSearch is supposedly some kind of spyware. It's not too terrible, but it does track your surfing and send the info back to them.

For pasting smilies into the forum, you need to use BB Code (something the Smiley Xtra extension I mentioned above will format for you). But basically just take the image url itself from the long code you posted. That'd be http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_3_16.gif and place it within the forum's IMG tags like so:

CODE
[IMG]http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_3_16.gif[/IMG]
which will give you:

If the software doesn't have a way to create BB Code that isn't dynamic and doesn't have all that extra junk on either side of the img tag itself, then it obviously doesn't work with all forum software. :nono:

All I see is that pesky box with the red X in it.

caseyw - March 27, 2007 07:37 PM (GMT)
I see the smiley just fine.

needmorezoloft - March 27, 2007 07:48 PM (GMT)
I see the box too Kel.

Ahhh, then it's probably one of Smiley Central's hotlinking mechanisms, so that you can't hotlink their images that way without putting in the rest of the other junk that tracks what page you're on and Goddess knows whatever else info they collect.

All in all, I don't think Smiley Central is worth the hassle and the extra shit they add to your computer (which is sometimes hard to remove). Read up on more user reviews at cnet's download.com.

I just realized that I am probably not seeing it because the website itself is blocked here at work (because of the spyware).

Ya know.. that might be why I can't see it either. I can try from home. :P

Oh, so if you're home, you're not gonna see my message to you till tomorrow that I just replied to at your work email. Shall I go to my sent mail and resend it to your yahoo addy?

Ok ... Well I REALLY DO appreciate all the help , but it's just not worth all the BS and the MyWeb is tweaking my comp too. So it's Adios to all my new smileys. Thanks so much for trying all. I'll just have to find another, better smiley maker , besides yelims.
